I was fixing my old pc back up so i can give it a family member and i put my radeon 9800xt in the computer fine, i booted up the pc and installed the ati drivers all good, but then i installed c$c generals to test it and when i go to run the game it says something like...please make sure you have installed directx 8.1 or higher, or check that you have a graphics card that meets the minimum requirements. wtf!!! so i check in dxdiag to see if its ok, and to discover that it doesnt detect the ram on the graphics card. the pc recognises everything else like the card, and stuff but not the ram on it.

anyone got any ideas how to fix this?

did you run dxdiag (start->run->dxdiag)? May give you more info. Try a reinstall of dx also.

If you still have problems when this is all said and done ship the card back to ATI, you have to pay for shipping one way but then ATI will fix or give you a new card and ship it back to you for FREE!!!

Did you install the mobo drivers before you installed the video card drivers?  Also, make sure that FastWrites are off in the BIOS.
