I'm doing some yearly budget adjusting, and I was surprised to see that a nice chunk of money is spent on razors for shaving. My "beard" growth is worthless, so I hate spending any money at all on this stuff, but alas shaving is a fact of life. Additionally, my face gets irritated easily so I can't do any of that 6-8 shaves per cartridge BS, I gotta use relatively new blades often.

I've been a Gillette Mach 3 fan for a while now, and while it does give a great shave, I don't want to keep spending so much money on those cartridges. For kicks, I gave a test run to the Gillette Fusion to see what that was all about, and while it does give a nice shave, I'll be dammed if I'm gonna spend 25 bucks a month on a set of 8 cartridges. I'd rather spend that money on extra bandwidth :-). Or more cable channels.

I have tried electric razors before but they just don't work for me. They don't give me a close enough shave, they irritate my face a bit, and I personally enjoy the wet shave better. I know this would probably be the most economical solution, but razor burn and irritated skin is not fun.

So, if you could please share what brand of razors you use, and the relative cost per razor/cartridge, I'd be very grateful. I want to test a few brands and see which works best both for my skin, and for my pocket. I've even been looking into just going old school with those double edge razors. 30 cents per blade can't be beat lol.

I use bic Advance. 3 Blades.

I get 5 for about 5 bucks. I have found they are not cheap (have little strip and are fairly clean shave) but not expensive. A happy median.

I've never found a good disposable razor. I use a Mach 3. It's a good razor, but the best razor I ever used was a Schtick Tracer. I don't even know if they still make them. I got it when those and the Mach 3's first came out.

One of my first razors, when disposables and electrics were the only choices really, was one of those were the razor is one whole piece and you replace just the blade. It was good and the blades were disposable so you always had a sharp blade. It wasn't double edged but maybe the same idea as what you're thinking of.

You could always go hardcore and get a straightedge.

Oh, and if you want to be cheap and have a good shave with what you have now, just let the hair grow more than you normally would, then shave. I always get a better shave and a smoother face when I let the hairs get long.

Good stuff, I'll look into that. And yea that's what I'm talking about with the disposable razor. Thing about my beard is that it grows really fast, but not dense at all. So it just looks scruffy if I leave it. Hence I gotta shave at least every other day.

There are these 2 time use blades here, a local brand, and it's actually really good. Gives a clean cut, right on edge and is cheap as hell.... but the changing process is weird and can easily break the whole thing...

It goes for around 45 cents a cartridge.

I have thick facial hair and could theoretically shave twice a day to stay baby butt smooth, but then I have very sensitive skin. I shave every other day and only shave down (not down and then up for the close shave) and that has helped immensely with skin. No more irritation. Another bonus is that it leaves a nice shadow that a lot of women like.

I used to use a Mach 3 and now use the Fusion razor.  My razor blades can last about 3 to 4 months.  Sure they get dull near the 10th shave, but I don't feel like changing them often.  I have very thick facial hair and they last a long time, you said you have a scruffy beard... so why don't you just not change them as often?

mach 3, wtf is wrong with these companies, can they not make a stupid razor strong enough to keep its razors sharp?

Dude, didn't you know?

It's a conspiracy.  They could make everlasting razors easy!  They just prefer you to buy new ones all the time, 'cause that way they make more money.

They got the idea from the light-bulb guys.  What, you think that after a century of developing lightbulbs we still can't make one that last more than a few months?

A conspiracy, I tells ya!

Uh...  apologies for the paranoid rantings.  Normal service will now resume.

I use an electric razor, mainly because I'm too lazy to get all lathered up on a regular basis.  It's getting a bit old, but it's a pretty good Remington, so it's lasting well.  Sure, it's not as close, but how close do you really need on a daily basis?  When wet-shaving, I've found it's a case of you gets what you pays for.  The pricey blades are better, simple as that.

Just go to a dermatologist or a hair "salon", get shaved, then get electrolysis on your beard and mustache areas. No more hair.

In my search for better, cheaper razors, I came across this site. I think we have gone too far now as a society with things like this ... cryogenically treated razors, damn. And yes, I guess MrE`158 is right, you get what you pay for with razors.

And that's not such a bad idea... i've tried to grow a beard before and I look like a hobo, so my facial hair is really worthless. Wouldn't mind getting rid of it.

I've nearly mastered the art of dry shaving. I dry shave on a daily basis, it's not as clean and can be a bit dangerous but it is fast, easy and not as messy, and I don't have time to lather up.

I do a full wet shave once a week when I feel I need to. The dry shaves work, but still leave a few stubbly pieces here and there.

Ive considered this..........because I fucking hate shaving.  Shaving < Everything else I do in my life.

I use a Schick Quattro.  Its a pretty good razor, cartridges are roughly $8 for 4 or 5 I think....if you buy the regular Quattro blades, rather than the fancy ass Titanium ones.  Ever since I started shaving, at 14-15 or so, I used an electric razor....which was fine, although the shave wasnt as close as a real razor.  But I moved on to the regular razor type.  The Quattro is great, I like it, as my friend explained it "you can run a marathon while shaving and not cut yourself with that thing".  Hes kinda right, you can shave fast and it doesnt peel your skin off.

It seems the Fusions are pretty good....but once I find something that works, I dont like to change it if I dont have to...thus Ill stick with the Quattro.
