OK, I have gathered all kinds of things, pre-built ones and such. And I am debating. One, I can install it and play (that is, if I dont reformat, things of that nature).

I definately want 2GB RAM this time, 1GB is enough, but still.

So, here is what I'm thinking, AMD and ATi. (Got an X800GTO gfx card, so as long as it has a PCI-e slot...)

Here is the first.
AMD Athlon 5000+
2GB RAM
ATi X800GTO
Etc, etc, etc.
.... it's cheaper at Bestbuy

Entry level Intel or top of the line AMD? Hmm....
Intel Core 2 Duo E6300
2GB RAM
X800GTO
... once again cheaper at Bestbuy

Mhmm, for pre builts, its loking like this: Circuit City > BestBuy > Newegg.

BEcause I found a bad ace pre-built: http://www.circuitcity.com/ccd/productD … 01&c=1

Prettry good, and in my price range when i get the rebate.

Custom:

Case
C2D Mobo
Entry Level C2D
Corsair is better... but ValueSelect isnt... XMS doesnt have 667, so yeah.
I've played with this card, it pwns. Dont let the price fool you... just runs a wee bit hot. nothing ATi Tool wont fix.
120BG enough?

654 dollars total.

Another... in the case that this is going to be cheaper (I'm building during this post. ) I might go with this. Under $1K.
Case Fine for me.
AM2 Mobo for a high end Athlon 64 X2.
High end AMD for my board.
This RAM pwns
Its a HDD?
And the other crap.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6835192007

I'm leaning toward my custom one...

Case looks good, would install a fan on the side, it will help a ton with CPU/GPU cooling.

Mobo I would ditch, this one I have used and is good:

Yea, case is just personal preference, as long as it has an intake, exhaust (And a top and side fans are big bonus's).

Good thing is, you have hundreds and hundreds to choose from, choice what you want to look at everyday.

Also steel vs aluminum makes a very small difference.  Aluminum will run slightly cooler (And I mean slightly) and steel is heavy.  Mine is a full tower steel that weighs a ton, however I do not move it so np's.  If you goto LAN parties and such, you may want to look into aluminum more then the latter.

And another thing.  If you order a ton of parts all at once, order from zipzoomfly.com  There prices are dollars more then newegg, however shipping on everything is free, so in the end you will save a bunch of cash not paying for 60 pounds of stuff.

They are a great selection of cases here:

Take you time and have fun.

Talk to you soon bro
Chris

but a case must be pimp You don't want to go to LAN parties with a standard Grey cigarette stained case.

(For the record, I have never attended a LAN party, I am not that big a nerd, I just like blue lights in my case )

i have had the hard drive you are gonna get for about 3 years and it is solid. also, get a better case. Otherwise, your custom build looks good.

That is a beast of a case, I have a TT Armor LCS case that keeps the temps ridiculously cool.

However for air, that one looks like it would do the job, however, how loud is it?

I hear yea, my first case and 7 or so cold cathode lights in it.  My new one just has two and those are to illuminate the WC setup.  Didn't go over the top.

You gotta be proud of your work, best advice, don't pick out a case with all the lights already installed.  Find a case you like and figure out how you want it light, THEN it's custom.

With the supplied fans very loud, but you can just replace them with silent fans for about £40.

that mobo is not compatible with my cpu.

other than that, this is my second build, i am done with the robotron cases, lol, or maybe not, third build will probably be another LED/clear side case.

it'd be funny (but VERY mean) if someone was like, "build me a computer, i have $2K." and someone gave them in-compatible parts. lol

hrm. anyway.

custom is cheaper and better, but still nto a clear choice for me for some reason.

Looking good. My only comment would be that while that RAM kicks ass, you could save yourself say 100 dollars by getting other decent ram (OCZ for example) and spend that on more HD Space ($50 extra gets you 320GB), a DVD Burner ($30 bucks gets you decent one, $20 more than your CD Drive now), and maybe another upgrade on something.

Btw, is your $1K limit including the video card? Is this a hard set number?

That is a kick ass setup, Sata drives, 939 chipset, 2 gigs RAM, XFI sound, Excellent Mobo, SLI 7900 GT card, so you can upgrade down the road, DVD-rw (Yes you will need it to backup files, and it is not much more money for the features you get), and one of the best CPU coolers.

Down side, I just burnt threw your budget and no case.  I would sugggest going on a bottle drive and posing as a boy scout

You can always drop down on the HD , SC, etc.  I would recomend the bottle drive though

Just another route to look at.

i thought it was the dual cores that decided what they do, not the app. if the new apps can take advantage of dual cores... then why cant we now?

Well, Des.Kmal, both you and Mong0ose are kind of correct - it isn't just about multitasking, it's also about multithreading - 'multitasking', as I'm sure you know, is running more than one app at once, 'multithreading' is where a single app does more than one thing at once - so, for example, in firefox, or IE7, if you open multiple pages on multiple panes it will launch multiple 'threads' - each thread handling the downloading of each page.

If an app is multithreaded then, with a multi-core processor, each thread within that app can be run on a different core.

Now, when it comes to games, on single core processors, single thread games are better, but, once enough people move over to multi-core, it will become advantagous to use multiple threads - for example, the graphics engine and the physics engine could run in seperate threads, on different processor cores.

Damn it! 23 came and went. And now 32 has gone the same way... (I liked having 32 karma, but not as much as liked having 23 (don't worry, that makes sense to me...))

oh, and on topic - multi-core rocks doesn't it - just think about what game developers will be able to do with quad-core (and more)!!!

That all depends on what you're going to use it for - if all you do is play BF2, then yeah, 120GB is plenty. If you also play other games (or just want others installed), plan on downloading lots of warez, want to create an mp3 library of all your cds, plan to do any sound, image or video editing, then 120GB will fill up fast and you're going to need more...
