hey, i'm at school at the minute in IT solutions, and our main project is to make up a company and build a computer perfect for their "needs". Me and my friend have both decided to make up companies that demand high powered machines. My company is a big computer game shop who is opening a new "attraction" which involves customers paying for an amazing PC gaming experience. My friend's company is doing high quality benchmark testing, so we both will need high powered PC's, which we will be building ourselfs.

now, here is where we need your help...

we're not too smart in the computer building area, and we need your help to help us find some of the greatest parts around the internet in which we can use. If you have any of these things that i hope you will be posting, then a little review would be great aswell.

I'm not asking you to do my work for me, just help me find the best parts and prices for these parts.

any help would be greatly apreciated, cheers

oh yeh, larma for who helps from me and xan

This might be not a bad idea but why don't you configure an IBM zSeries Mainframe computer.

once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. go to tomshardware.com and  just look at the latest benchmarks/charts for cpu's,video cards, ram, mobo's etc.  or just go to newegg and look at the latest nvidia 7 series or ati's 1xxx series.  same for amd or intel.

Pretty straightforward really.

For Processing you want the quickest C2D you can get, which is still the X6800, I think.
Memory you want some very high frequency DDR2, with decent timings - there's some nice Corsair Dominator stuff that does 4-4-4-12-2T @ 1111MHz, pricey - but it's gotta be fast as fuck - 4x1GB sticks should do you - although you probably won't notice a lot of difference past 2GB on current games.
Hard Drive will be an interesting issue, you could go the Raptor RAID route, or spend a bit more on a nice 15K SCSI disk, alternatively you could really go all out and get a superfast RAMdisk (like the HyperDrive IV), which would be by far the quickest option.
Some sort of Quad SLI (2xGX2) graphics setup probably the fastest you can sensibly get for graphics, should look very impressive on display, especially if you only run games that have well configured SLI profiles, FEAR would be a good example. The 8800 is on the verge of being released, you could go for one of those if it's out soon enough for you.

Make sure you get a really nice monitor for all this to run on. Personally I'm not a huge fan of all the Dell and Apple monitors people seem to rave about. I've used them many times, but there are many others I prefer. There is a 24" Samsung that I'm very fond of - but that's probably too small to show off your system properly.

If it's for demonstration purposes maybe some quality headphones would be a good idea too. I would have said speakers, but that might be a little disturbing in a shop.

Yeah pretty much what everyone else has said.

Can you give a little more information....what will this computer really be used for?  Gaming, showing off, managing your business?

Yes, looking to run multiple high demand rendering programs for 3d modeling? want a top of the line gaming rig (which will suck in six months time)?  Want to edit video while downloading an unsafe (medically speaking) amount of prOn?

Must specify, if you want all the above?  build three to fourteen computers and organize a network that can share the desired results (and congrats on winning the lotto BTW).....

EDIT: I CANT SPEEL

There's so many high-performance computer companies that you'll be better off, for your fake company, offering enhanced customer service over "the best of the best." How about Dell-like upgrade programs? Discounts on games for a year?

Mk, let me try settin up a Workstation

Lets start with the Motherboard

Intel Motherboard SE7520BB2 - up to 2 DualCore Intel Xeon Processors
                                            - Eight DIMM Sockets for up to 16GB of DDR2 Memory

Processor #1-  64-bit Intel Xeon 5160 Dual Core processors @ 3.73GHz 4MB L2 Cache 1333Mhz FSB
Processor #2 - 64-bit Intel Xeon 5160 Dual Core processors @ 3.73GHz 4MB L2 Cache 1333Mhz FSB

Memory - 8GB DDR2 SDRAM FBD Memory, ECC etc (4 DIMM slots) - Upgradable to 16GB DDR2 SDRAM (8 DIMMs)

O/S - Microsoft XP Professional x64 Edition

GPU - Nvidia Quadro 4500 512MB PCI-Ex16, Motherboard doesn't support SLi, however you could put in a Nvidia 7950GX2 1GB PCI-Ex16 which is SLi enabled but only requires 1 PCI-Express Slot

Sound Card - Sound Blaster X-Fi series

HardDrive - boot drive must be SATA, however you could put in 2 SCSI(SAS) drives 73GB @ 15,000RPM

With some crappy USB keyboard and mouse

oh BTW you might want to get a PSU over 1Kilowatt (1000W)

all this for a Workstation, which is used in buisness' laboratories and such however it could be used for gaming obviously, hope this is useful, you asked us not to do your work, you can go research all this stuff yourself, you got the internet

btw, I think I WIN imo

get a full tower case. Thermaltake makes some beast case with 250mm side fans that are cool.

intel ftw...kentsfield (4core) supposedly out november...get one.

4 GB DDR2 at some insanely high rating (1066 or better) 4x1gb modules

some insanely good motherboard...have to wait untill the proc is out to get a good mobo tho...

4x WD raptor in RAID

dont forget the 2x WD 500GB  for storage

the DX10 card (nvidia g80 (aka GeForce 8800)) is expected out in november as well...get one or two.

soundblaster x-fi is the best sound card...hands down.

xp pro sp2....vista still has compatibility issues (given that it is a beta....err, RC)

dual dell 24" LCD's

should run you about 5 grand

4 x 2GB DDR2 1066MHz

X Fi Soudblaster sound card

2 x 150GB Raptor (RAID 0)

2 x 500GB SATA2 Drives (Maybe RAID 10)

1KW PSU

Liquid / Liquid Nitrogen cooling

30" Dell Monitor

Dual boot XP and SUSE

Looks pretty good...

core 2 extreme is a better processor and you don't really need 8 gb.  So no, you don't win

8GB of RAM would be better put to use on a RAMdisk (if you've got money to burn). That way you'd actually use it. No game uses 8GB of memory. All that redundancy, what a horrible waste.

Solid state storage FTW!

-QX6700 (ladies and gentlemen, quad core has arrived)
-Asus P5B Deluxe
-8800GTX (or get 2 for SLI)
-(2x) 750GB Seagate 7200.10 (1.5TB of storage!)
-(2x) 74 GB Raptors (RAID 0)

-You will need to find a huge full tower case, Lian Li is good, Cooler Master Stacker is good, find one that suits your needs...but it needs to be huge!!
-(2x) Dell 3007WFP 30" monitors!
-Nice freakin speakers

If you actually can afford all this ($7000+) PM me and I will give you some more detailed advice on the top of the line parts we see today.
