Possible harddrive failure

My brothers computer has broken down and I think it is the harddrive that has broken. Is there anyway to check if its deffinately is the harddrive that is broken?

And is it possible to replace the main harddrive with my external harddrive temporarly to see if everything else works on the computer?

put another harddrive in it and if it works then its the drive if it doesnt work its not the drive

Yep, I have tried to restore the computer and reinstall windows but it fails to install windows.

Yes, you can boot with an external drive. You may have to change a few BIOS settings, though.

Does the BIOS recognize the drive? Did you create new partitions prior to installing Windows?

How do you know it is the drive, and not the RAM, motherboard, processor, even the power supply? ...
