My birthday is in 2 weeks, and I'm looking to upgrade my PC.

Right now I have:

[*] DFI Lanparty UT NF4 Ultra-D motherboard ATX/S-ATA/Dual-GB-LAN/8ch-LYD/1394/
[*] AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ 2.0 Ghz BOXED Socket 939 Dual-Core
[*] Antec Sonata II Miditower Black w/450W
[*] Club3D Geforce 7900 GT 256MB PCIe 256MB GDDR3
[*] Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 250GB SATA2 8MB 7200RPM
[*] Creative SB X-Fi XtremeMusic PCI Retail
[*] NEC DVD-burner ND-3550 IDE Black OEM DVD+R/+RW/DVD-R/-RW (Dual layer)
[*] Corsair TWINX2048-4000PT DDR-DIMM 2048MB Kit w/two matched CMX1024-4000PT CL3 DIM
[/list]
yes, that is coppied from the order recipt

What should I upgrade? If you could make an ordered wish-list, it would be great (most important on top, less important on the bottom).

thanks...

edit: Someone pwnt me and fixed the list.

Looks like a pretty decent pc...

Maybe a processor upgrade?

Theres not much point adding / replacing your GFX card until DX10 is out...

budget?

Dude, that machine is too high end still to think about throwing money into upgrading it.  The ONLY thing is maybe Hard Drive space - but thats only if you're into video and music files like me.  Otherwise, you're good for another year.

I have a Dell 19" LCD, should I upgrade? Dualscreen maybe?

No budget, it's a wish-list. Everything is possible

a matching hard drive to be able to run raid zero(if your board supports that at least) for ultimate speed in loading your game is all i would say your missing. My machine is outdated but i still beat the newer machines into the server . Plus it will double your space, not like you really need it unless you do alot of downloading.

RAID ZERO ROCKS!!!

Possibly only a processor upgrade.  Thats all I would get with those specs...

for me, that hard drive size is fine.  But that might be the only other thing I might suggest...

so... Extra HD and a DX10 (when it comes) is what I should go for?

When is the DX10 coming?

Go with a new processor, and 8800GTX. These cards are CPU limited so you need the fastest CPU you can get to run them well...I'm afraid your 3800 X2 won't cut it. A 4800 X2 or higher would be better but not much.

Unless you are running low on space I don't see why you need to upgrade your HD.

Your computer is on a dead socket (939). If you have the money it would be best to just upgrade to a newer socket like AM2 or if you want to get Intel (I reccommend it!) socket 775 is the way to go. These sockets still have years left in them. Keep in mind though that a move to either of these sockets is going to be on the more expensive side, especially since they both use the DDR2 memory that is priced very high right now.

I would just go with the CPU/GPU upgrade. This is the easiest upgrade. You would also need a new PSU now that I look at your specs. You need atleast a 500W quality PSU... Seasonic, Enermax, Silverstone, Enhance, PC Power & Cooling, Hiper, just to name a few.

8800GTX launch is Nov. 8. There aren't supposed to be major shortages but I would assume that if you don't get one launch day that you might have to wait a week or so for new stock.

OP: Screw upgrades with your system. It's good enough. I'm running fine with a single core 3500+ and a 6800Ultra with 2GB mixed RAM. Instead, save that birthday money for a 2007 rig.

i guess you could buy a good cooler and oc the hell out of it. it is a good pc and will continue to run everything well in the nearish future. or save the favours if possible and call on them when something new and cool is out. i had dual monitors for a while but it was a waste really. i rarely used the second one

EDIT: and sayin that the 3800+ is too low is bs. if i up my proc speed to 240x10 (and the 3800+ should easyly do that) i hardly see any fps increase with increased cpu speed after that. and i'm running an oced x1900xt which is still pretty much the fastest there is out there. even a 8800GTX will not require a much faster proc not to be bottlenecked (it will be when you run 800x600 all low, but who does that anyways?)

once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

I would suggest a new power supply, like a 500W, Take HuntKey, I have HuntKey myself and they are very Silent, Powerful, Reliable and not so expensive!

Another thing I would suggest, That is important though, Are some casefans. These are quite cheap but are very good for a thing called air-flow, It keeps everything cool, You are able to overclock much more than without fan`s,

I would say; Good luck with choosing some upgrades!

Yours,

I'm sprry for bumping this thread, but I haven't chosen yet and christmas is around the corner

To sum it all up -
  • The 8800 GTX
  • New PSU (600W ?)
  • Max said good cooler... Link to a good one?
  • Casefans - I don't think I have any more sockets for them..
In 2007:
  • über core 2 quadro intel cpu
  • A mobo to go with it (Intel Socket 775?)

I thought that what unnamednewbie13 said was a good Idea. Will getting these parts (the first list now, the second in '07) get me a good 2007 rig?

Also, when is this über leet CPU comming? What part of 2007?

Another thing.. Should I replace my Antec Sonata II Miditower with a better case?

Try 750W for SLI that you will probably need eventually.

No official release date's, since intel only have one quad core atm, you could assume they will bring out other version's, (after all the current and only quad core is just two E6700's glued together) in the not to distant futre.  Lookin at something else becoming available late Q1 2007 I would think

Look, I've said it before, but save your birthday money. That system doesn't need upgraded, and you won't really see any visible improvement out of it. Again, save your birthday money for a new system entirely.

If you have some sort of a mental condition that requires you to upgrade, then grab yourself a 7950GT 512MB for $260, but that's it.

While the core 2 duo conroes own, the quad cores suck because of the way they're designed.

But I look forward to the price drop on the core 2 duo though

*ahem* Doesn't seem to hurt their benchmark scores.

wow you guys are lame his system is fine although i would get a less oc feature filled board less for you to fuck up....

cpus dont bottleneck cpus per say fx62 gets same gaming score as x6800 even though the 6800 smokes it
