ok, so i've been running off of a wireless internet connection for a while now, and just today my computer is recieving a hardline ethernet connection.

the only problem is that i can't get it to work. it gets an IP assigned, it recognizes that its connected to the internet, and the light flashes by the port, but no internet. the two little PC screens in my task bar are a constant grey, and there is no network connection.

any ideas?

Is the computer connected to a router or directly to a cable modem?

its a direct connection, and when i run off of the wireless it still works fine, its just the ethernet that doesn't work.

When you click on the two little computers in the start bar and open the local area connection status window, what does it say in the support tab? (The Address type, IP address, Subnet mask, and Default gateway)

automatic private address

it gives a valid IP

and 255.255.0.0 for subnet

no default gateway is listed

Well I see one of your problems. You have to set the TCP/IP protocol to obtain an IP address automatically and obtain DNS server automatically.

thats checked, and i ripped the ethernet card out of an old pc (its a new ethernet card) that i don't use anymore, popped it in, and it works fine, so i'll just go with that.
