Hi guys, if anyone can help me figure this out I'll give you karma every day for ten days and will ask some mates to chip in as well.

My problem is this: many times when I enter the doors of the titan, my framerate drops to about 4 per second. The sound effects stutter. When I walk back outside the titan, the problem goes away. This does not happen every time I go into the titan, but many times. And recently it's been happening outside the titan too, sometimes on Minsk when both titans are near each other in the air.

Initially I thought the problem was on the server side and for some reason my computer didn't like certain servers. A lot of times I could reboot the game and I wouldn't have the problem the next time.

However I've come to think that it's not a server-specific issue, because even after I disconnect, the super-slowness happens in the 2142 setup menus. And one time when the game crashed, I had a Windows popup window waiting for me on the desktop saying that Windows was low on virtual memory and that I should close some programs.

I tried to fix this after googling for a bit. I think part of the problem is that I have such a small C partition, which was recommended by many sources when I set up my computer. I have around 2 gigs of free space on C, so I can guess when virtual memory used is greater than the amount of free space, that's when I start getting the major problems. I also read that with 64-bit systems like mine, if you have enough ram you don't need to have a pagefile. So I set my system to have no pagefile, but that didn't work either, I still have the same problem sometimes.

Does anyone have any ideas, and can you help me to figure out how to best set up my virtual memory / page file?

I'm running XP Pro, x64 version. Windows is installed on C partition, which is 8GB and has 2 gigs free. 2142 and other programs are installed on E partition which is 40GB and has 9 gigs free. I also have a G partition which is 200 GB and has 160GB free. My GPU is a Nvidia 6800GT, and my main CPU is an Opteron. I am running 2142 at 800x600 with most ingame video settings at low or medium.

I've never had any program installed on a different partition than the same partition Windows is on.  Hell, I don't even use partitions anymore. IF you want to seperate memory, I always use seperate Hard drives. costs money, but Partitions just create headaches IMO, like this one maybe? I'd say your Virtual mem is bogged down by these partitions, BTW, how much RAM do you have?

The only way you will get this to stop in the long run is more RAM, the only reason your computer is running over into your harddrive is due to not enough RAM, the reason it then goes laggy is because it takes longer to load of harddrive than RAM. Hope that helps.

erm... what i do now b4 i play is ctrl alt del and click processes and close all the ones on your admin name except explore and taskmgr. if you click user name they should be at the bottom.. also turn off ur firewall, run cccleaner if u have it and see if u have any spyware.. u prob know all this already thou... if u didn't maybe it will make a difference... u don't have much mem left eh!

one other thing if this doesn't work is install bf2 on your g drive? you need to have a lot more gigs free i think..

hope it helps..

you should have atleast 15% of your hard drive free so your computer will have enough virtual memory. hard drive space is used for virtual memory. either uninstall anything that you dont need to free up more space or get a bigger hard drive.

Thanks for the ideas guys.

I don't think my ram is an issue. I am using 2GB of dual channel Corsair RAM.

I have 3 hard drives installed. Windows is on a small partition on HD #1, programs run on a larger partition on HD#2, and I've also got 80GB and 200GB storage drives.

For the time being, I've moved my page file to my 200GB drive, and I set min to 3GB and max to 8GB. Anyone have any thoughts on how to determine the best virtual memory / page file set up? are there any good apps that do this automatically?

Going to keep playing like this for a while and see if I get the same issue. If anyone has other suggestions for maximising my setup, please let me know!

I've just skimmed through all this but I noticed a few things. You ALWAYS want your swap file to live on your operating system drive. Try setting it to 1024MBmin / 1536MBmax. That's what I had mine set at with 2 gigs OCZ and it worked like a champ. However, I've never played 2142 so....give the 1024 size a try.

I used Tune Up Utilites 2006 to sort out most things.
