I picked up that X850 Pro to replace a worn-out 9600 Pro in one of my old systems because I know its capabilities and what upgrades it can take advantage of.

What? DOES THE ATI 100-435712 Radeon X850PRO 256MB 256-bit GDDR3 VIVO AGP 4X/8X Video Card CAN RUN BF2/2142 AT FULL SETTING?!
The card isnt everything.  If you want to be on max with out lag your gonna need 2 gb of ram.
What he said. You (colonelioan) have 512MB RAM and, what is today, a substandard video card. To upgrade both and run BF2 at full settings [you don't need to max everything, as there's no visual difference between some options (discussed in other threads)], you'd have to spend around ~USD$250. And then your CPU may end up being a bottleneck itself. And then you might hit the 'whoops, the motherboard can't accept a newer processor' mark.

What a headache.

Just buy a new pci-e system. There was some thread around here good computer under 1200 euros with e6400 and 8800gts.
What he said. You (colonelioan) seem to be of the technical level to where you would be better off just grabbing a new PC altogether. A PCIe system would be somewhat more future-proofed than what you have right now.

If you want to increase your computer know-how:

Microsoft must release something to address this, but from what I read, vista MUST have a dx10 card for it to run, therefor your all looking atleast an 8 series nvidia, or ati's next flagship card.

unnamednewbie13 is right, your far better getting a new machine from the ground up, these days you can get great machines for sub $1200.  Anything above that the better ofcourse.  If you up to an 850pro as budget restrict's you're gonna find your self in the position wanting to go to vista and not being able to, again shelling out more for a new system then.

You will need a new machine my friend, nvidia WILL release different versions of the 8 series in the next few months, cheaper and more expensive ones alike.

Take the advice of new machine, otherwise your wasting money, but if you can, wait till end of january at the earliest to change machine.  For the moment, try and live with it.
