Just wanted to let y'all know that I downloaded patch 1.41, and was told somewhere on this site that I should go to some site and download an AMD Dual Core patch to speed up game play (I have a Gateway deathmobile with something like 3 gigs of ram but I thought that the dual core patch would make things even faster) and I did so.

The day after I downloaded the new BF2 patch and the dual core patch, the hard-drive and processor and mother board turned into something akin to Matchlight briquettes. The whole thing is hopelessly fried. The supposition is that the patch overclocked things and burned it out.

It's all of 8 months old.

Anyway, I have a 2 hour battery backup megadollar surge protector thing, and the best cabling I could buy, so the only thing I can conceive of it being is this dual core patch. Also, when I took it to BestBuy the Geek Squad guy asked if I had "done anything to enhance game play, like a core patch". He said he's seen it before.

Maybe it was something else, maybe it wasn't.  Just a warning.

I dont know but getting a patch for the BF2 seems unlikely to me that it would fry your computer. Like I say I dont know just seems improbable, but hey maybe it did, now im rambling...

i sincerely doubt a patch fried your computer. there's logical explanations as to why that all will have happened. If your motherboard or PSU fry (which they do on MILLIONS of computers), it can wreck the entire system.

Uh.. the patch did not fry your computer....

I have the same patch and it fixed all the BF2 Lost connection issues. Patch has been running for over 6 months.

Hi,

I am running an AMD x2 4400+ with 1.41 and the dual core patch. It still goes laggy if I don't set affinity to 1 cpu. Mobo and cpu are ok, no probs.

Dude that sucks.  Sorry to hear about the loss.  Please please please tell me you at least made lemonade with the lemons.  Did you make cyber s'mores on the fire?  If not you should have.  Cyber S'mores are yummy, I think it's the thermal paste that gives em that extra kick.

It's not 1.41 that did it, its the processor patch. I think people with dual cores (like me) can download 1.41 and it'll work fine, just don't download the processor patch.

I have an Intel C2D anyways so I can still get the 1.41 patch wth no problems.

I fried my X1900XTX the other day. I was up all night trying to fix it. I had to run drive cleaners, un-install anything ATI, artifact scan, restore computer and re-install motherboard, gfx card and monitor.

I now need to run the fan on 100% to prevent disco lights and invisible infantry.

LOLOL, are you completely retarded?! Patches don't just overclock stuff randomly...

I'm not sure what patch you're talking about here, but be it the 1.41 patch or AMD's dual-core hotfix, it is obviously user-failure that screwed up your stuff. Neither EA Games/DICE (no matter how much you think they suck) nor AMD would release a patch that "overclocked things" to burn it out. Thinking so would indeed make you seem ignorant of the situation.

The dual-core hotfix is a fix that all people with AMD 64-bit X2 processors should get. They are "drivers" (if you will) that allow better use and efficiency of the two cores. It in no way will harm PC performance unless you did something majorly wrong. Don't listen to the people at Best Buy, they're just trying to rip you off as always.

I have an amd athlon 64 x2 dual core processor, and bf2 runs fine w/o anything.  All I have is 1.41, nothing else...

But, after reading info on the patches, and after reading what happened to your comp, I'm debating whether I should download anything.  The comp im on right now is not even a month old

Ah screw it, why risk my comps health for something I don't need, especially when games run fine

I assure you your computer won't melt if you download a hotfix provided by AMD, so long as you follow instructions.

This is the reason you should never mess with your computer unless you know what the f*ck you are doing!

And was told somewhere on this site that I should go to some site and download an AMD Dual Core patch to speed up game play (I have a Gateway deathmobile with something like 3 gigs of ram but I thought that the dual core patch would make things even faster) and I did so.
Next time, make sure you KNOW what the patch does and if you don't, DON'T mess with it...

I'm certainly not suggesting that 1.41 had anything to do with my meltdown. I believe that something in the dual-core patch roasted my box.

I guess it's sitting in BFE getting remade right now. I hope they can salvage some data...

Anyway, just a warning. It may be that I'm a computer moron and none of you super whizbang genius computer geeks would ever melt a computer down the way I did, and it may be that what I did had nothing to do with it, I'm just reminding other 40 year old "don't know that much about computers" guys who are out there that you might just be screwing yourself if you let anything into your system, no matter how innocent it seems.
