I just bought a house.  It is only a couple of years old, so I thought that it would have cable or dsl Internet connections for sure.  It doesn't.  Satellite Internet is like $100 a month, so I thought I would go with a different option.

I have what Sprint calls "Microwave Broadband."  It's cheap and pretty fast but super temperamental and absolutely sucks for gaming.  I constantly get connectivity problems and insane ping spikes that get me kicked.  My question for you all is - Do I have any options?

Do any of you use Satellite?  Is it temperamental too?

Is it possible to use a regular telephone connection with a Bigfoot Killer Nic card?

I suggested moving and my wife got pissed.  Any help will be greatly appreciated.

And yes, I did search (it came up with about 700 results, and I don't have 14 hours to read them all).

Where do you live?

edit: Comcast, SBC, Verizon, Optimum Online, Earthlink, Speakeasy are good ISP's.

DSL runs thru existing phone lines, so get a service provider (AT&T, Verizon) that offer DSL as well

My brother has satellite internet, and he gets pings of around 2000ms (2 seconds) to the first hop. DEFINITELY not for gaming.

Can you get cable TV there?  Sometimes the cable/dsl providers dont have equipment close enough to run the internet there.  My parents have the same issue, they are close enough to get DSL, but the exchange is full.

This is probably under the wrong section btw.  Should possibly be under "Tech".

Go for cable or Clearwire (if it's available in your area).

I thought I did put it under tech... oops.  First thread.

Thanks all of you for the adice.  I have tried most of the things you all have listed, but you have mentioned a couple of new ideas.  I will look into them.

In my old house I had Comcast.  Be grateful if you have cable internet... it is the greatest.

Sorry about the double post, but +1 to you all.

We didn't have cable internet in our area at first but we kept calling and complaining and then they eventually did our street only.

Just a bit more info

Comcast: Cable internet, TV, and digital voice for phone service

Verizon: DSL internet, FiOS Fiber Optic internet (limited availability, but if you can get it it's very good), FiOS TV (also limited), telephone services

SBC: I THINK it's DSL, but might be cable. Run/owned by Yahoo! so it's not some random ISP. I believe they also have TV service.

Opt Online: Cable internet and I think also fiber optic internet

Earthlink: DSL internet, i think also cable internet

Speakeasy: DSL internet

Try and avoid Comcast if possible. Here on the east coast they hold a monopoly on all things TV and internet, although with FiOS VErizon is giving them a run for their money. All hail Verizon. Comcast has horrid customer support. Verizon's isn't much better, but with better pricing for similar services it's gonna make Comcast cry. Lovin my FiOS internet, and eagerly awaiting FiOS TV.

edit: Negative, fiber optic>cable =p

Thanks Hurricane.  I live in Utah, and Comcast has a bit of a Monopoly here too.  I will look into some of those other suggestions.

First, satelite connection will probally not allow you play an online game.  Most of them use the satilite to download content, and a 56K dial up to upload data.  This would be way to slow for online gaming, like BF2.

The Killer Nic, will not assit you.  This is a Network Card and not a modem, so it will not work with dial up.

Most DSL modems come with filters don't they?  Shouldn't be an issue unless your exchange is full.

I have comcast in VA...  rated at 16mb down 1 mb up... i get 25 mb down on speakeasy.net and 1 mb up...
FIOS is coming soon... 30mb down and 5mb up for 55 bucks a month...  Satellite is sketchy as you know...
Im sure it will get better in time but for now... hardwired is the way 2 go

Sadly, satellite internet isnt going to be good for gaming either. You can get really good speeds with it, but becuase the signal has to go into space and back, the pings will be crap.

Cable is good. I've never had that many probs with it. Supposdly insight said it's going to be faster here in a couple of months. (that's a laugh but all prepaying cutomers don't have to pay for the new service. Free upgrade's nice....if it's true)

weamo8, I'd recommend DSL dude; if you have an existing phone line thats your way to go. Also cable could be a choice. But you could help us solve your problem if you say:

- Where do you live (rural area, suburbs, etc).
- If you want to make some extra installations done in your house for the wiring.

Dude, just call either your telco provider or your cable provider and see who offers broadband to your house for the best price.  If you can't get a wired broadband, then do DIAL UP as it will still be safer than satelite or p2p (sprint)...not sure if the pings will be too far to play on a bf2 server, i'm sure there's dial up bf2 players who could help you.

Isn't qwest the main provider in Utah?  Surely they can hook you up with a good deal...if you're home isn't too far from a CO.  For DSL, you need to be at least 15,000 feet from a co (DSLREPORTS.COM has a CO qualifier tool on it)..cable internet..just has to be offered in your neighborhood to qualify.

Good luck!

Yeah Qwest is the main provider here (I'm impressed you know that).  I've talked to Qwest about DSL, and Comcast about Cable, and they both say they dont have support in my area.  I dont know what the deal is.

Is it possible that AT&T might have DSL in my area even though Qwest doesnt?  (I obviously dont know too much about internet service).

yaochelotl, I live right outside Salt Lake City.  My house is in the suburbs, but it is within a couple of miles of civilization.

I am willing to install anything.

Is there a kind of service you can get anywhere besides satellite and dial-up?

BTW,  I am grateful that you all have been so helpful.  Usually when someone asks a question that shows how stupid they are they get flamed to death.  Thank you all for being cool.  There will be more karma coming around when I lapse the 10-karma-per-24-hour state.

Usually if one DSL provider says they can't help you, then none of them can because they all use the same CO.  And by CO, I mean "central office".  A CO is just a utility box owned by a telco that sits out on the street in various neighborhoods.  It's where telco techs go to do various things.  And if a CO is equipped with a DSLAM, then they can provide DSL circuits to the residents of that CO (or within 15,000 feet from it).  SO if none of the DSL providers can give you service, it's because theyhaven't provisioned that DSLAM yet.  New neighborhood?  Are you out in Tooele or something?  What zip code are you in, i'll tell you the closest CO from you.

84087.  I am in a city called Woods Cross.  I am just north of Salt Lake City - to the west of Bountiful.

My neighborhood is about 3 years old.  Isnt that old enough?

3 years is negligable for provisioning a dslam, but if there's alot of new neighborhoods (which is the case all up and down that lake west of 15) going up..it could take longer.

Here's the CO finder i was talking about.  Put your residence info in there and see if you are close to a serviceable CO: http://www.dslreports.com/prequal
