Heres my situation. I have a pc thats slowly turning into an ancient artifact. I want to build a new system.

I want you to recommend a cpu + gpu.

Notes::
1 GPU should be good, but not too exspencive. (I want to upgrade to an R600 If/When I get vista).
2 It must be ATi + PCI-E. I was thinking either an X850 or X1600. Dunno much about either though.
3 Crossfire is not what im looking for.
4 CPU shouldnt cost more than £140.
5 I would prefer AMD.(Edit:Ok i donst have to be amd, just thats what im use to plus they have a better reputation)

Any particular reason for wanting to use AMD?  As a past and current AMD user, even I see that the C2D is simply a better processor, and quite honestly, aren't any more expensive than AMD, with better performance.

Either way you go you will need DDR2, and you can find some reasonably priced C2D boards, especially if you don't need one with heavy overclocking abilities.

As for an ATi card to hold you over until Vista/R600, maybe see what you can find in the X1800GTO or X1900GT.

No disrespect, but by specifying AMD and ATI (PCI-E) and giving a budget you've done all the work. It doesn't exactly leave a lot of scope for options.

Forget AMD for now, go C2D, an ASUS P5W-DH, and whatever GPU you can afford until the one you want is released.

Get a C2D 6300. About £100, no point in getting the 6400, the extra cache doesn't help much. 6300 and 6600 are CPUs of choice.

Why? It's slower than a 6300 and more expensive.

No, the GT is the step right below the XT.  It's basically what the Pro used to be.
