Is a Pentium 4 with hyper threading a dual processor? I uploaded my "Rig Info" to my xfire profile and it says it had 2 processors. Also in my task manager I can set the affinity of things to 1 or 2. I don't know if it's a true 2 processor chip or if it's just the HT tricking everything into thinking I have 2. Anyone know for sure?

I also forgot, would it be a good upgrade to get a Core 2 duo? After christmas I'm planning on getting a whole new computer that I'll build myself. So if you want to see what I have now, my xfire name is rumblefishisonfire and my set up is in my profile.

No its not a dual core processor. Because of the dual threading in the processor, the "Hyper Threading", the computer will read the processor as having two cores but it is only the threads that cause this.

HT=Hyper Threading.

Its overhype to sell their chips. Its a load of balls.

Pentium D is the dual core, or for the good ones, Core 2 Duo is the shit

On the contrary, P4's with HT are duals. Check this out.

By the way, I'm running a P4 w/ HT @ 3.4 GHZ.

P4 HT isn't dual core, never has been never will be.

No they are not dual, what you are seeing are the dual threading of the processor. I too have owned a P4 with HT and do know what they do and don't do. The only way this processor is a dual core is either its a Pentium D, Core, or Core 2 processor.

c2d is a good upgrade and they have a higher FSB (speed) than the HT

yea...just to make sure u got it...all hyperthreading do is make it say that it is 2 cpu's, but it isn't, it is only 1 single core.

Never trust anyone over 30!

I've got a 3.2ghz HT (but I was friggen 12 with a £1600 budget damit I didnt know what was wat ) I swore I would never buy another intel cpu........  C2D changed that, but I may get an AMD FX-72 for the price of a E6700, makes sense to me, ish

P.s mine is also a dell, ahh the shame of it all!

As noted by Maj.Do, HT is not dual processors.  It is one physical processor, but the HT functions make Windows see a virtual processor as well.  HT essentially tries to schedule data to be fed into a pipe for execution when the pipe would normally be idle.  Because this is not a true second CPU, and things do happen, there can be instances where the HT scheduling gets interrupted and can actually decrease performance, not help it.

dont forget HT uses alot of power too.

I have a 2.6GHz P4 w/HT. I ran some speed tests rendering video. When I turned the HT off, the video rendering went faster so I thought "cool! I'll leave it off so when I play BF2, it will work better"

Not the case. Random crashes until I re-enabled it. Just sharing my boring story...
