Bolt action.

Ingame I prefer the L96A1 and if I am after Sniping pilots from choppers then I go for my M95.

What he says is possible on a target with less than full health.  When used properly the L85A1 can be very accurate, I just prefer the scope on the F2000.

Bolts, because they have x5 Zoom (semi's have 3.3), less deviation, sound better and do more damage per round.

The M24sws is the most seXeh Rifle in BF2

they are much better, even though the SVD hes come close range capabilities, i still think the snipers were nerfed in 2142 cause of the breathing

Auto snipers are for those who cant get a head shot the first time...Not saying they aren't out there, but Ive never come across a good sniper using an auto gun.

Both for me. I like the semi auto for more close range which is what I tend to be doing when I snipe.

i tend to avoid the SVD and Type 88 cuz they lack finess and i cant pick off super far off sillouettes in the fog with them.  that, and i can usually quick snipe them wit my L96A1 if they get close cuz they do 3 things:
1. stop moving completely and go insano full auto trigger mash which wastes ammor and is innacurate as hell.
2. dolphin dive, where u then stand up and plug them in the skull.
3. switch to pistol/knife, where i then stab them in the face or pistol the crap out of them..98% of my pistol killz were while playing snipe.

It simply depends on your playing style. I have over 6.000 kills with sniper rifles and most of them by the use of the SVD, which I consider to be the best one for my playing style. Semi-Auto gives you the advantage of versatility, you can be effective at anywhere from middle to long ranges as also in very close range. With the pistol you are mostly dead in a 1:1 situation, if you didn't catch the enemy from behind. With my SVD I win about 60% of every close combat duell. I need 3 shots (4 if target is armored) and I usually need less then a second for that. With that in mind I can cap flags, can go to the front line and can change my position very fast. Perfect for my playing style, since I consider it to be to boring to wait and wait for a victim.
The bolt actions are almost useless in close combat, since it is more often luck than anything else to hit the enemy's head if he is jumping around. After you fired your shot, you will be dead even before you have drawn the pistol. 
So the (only) advantage with bolt action is range. Clearly the M24/L96A1 are better at ranges above 200m. But give it a thought about how effective you really are. How many of those you snipe will be reanimated, because the jumping medic is too difficult to hit at such a long range ? You help the team if you press the attack or if you can defend a point. If you simply lie around in a secret place, generating more and more kills without ticket loss for the enemy, you play for yourself, not for the team.
And finally, if you catch a sniper on a crane, a high roof or a hill with his shiny, precise L96A1 with just one simple shot of your puny little Type 88, this is really, really sweet. I would give my 2 Sniper unlocks away for the possibility to use an SVD as USMC. Actually I often check a dead enemy sniper for his weapon, sometimes I'm lucky.

Semis are the best rifles if you know how to use them. Seriously, SVD and Type-88 are the fucking bomb, im gonna make a vid showing just how good they can be.

But the bolts are best for long range stuff, and when you want to be sniping on "easy" mode, lol.

You cant compare bolt action to semi auto, you can only compare the players behind the scope

Bolt action i prefer definitely, that is if your a lying and waiting sniper, if your going to be advancing with your squad use a semi-auto, gives you the quick shots you need to kill them close enemies, also could someone tell me how to use the m95 properly, I'm useless with it, the cross hair is too big to get head shots? Wayne-o23

i used to use the L96 a lot...now i use the SVD, and the Type-88. Or, if i need to, then the M24.

So, id say semi's

But yea, what matters is the person pushing the "fire" button
