I have invested enough time into this game and am around 250 points from my gunnery rank and I need to get better in the air (planes(I like to fly the helos with the mouse and keyboard)). I bought a piece of crap joystick and am suffering the consequences for it. When I sit in a plane and get ready to take off, it starts going backwards. What is causing this? Is it the joystick or settings? Plus the throttle sucks. It is very hard to find a good flying speed for bombing runs and for when I am in a dogfight. I am looking to buy another joystick, but would like some feedback from some experienced pilots.

I am one of those who actually likes to fly not just sit by the helo and wait for a pilot so that I can get all of the points.

Any help here would be great and any additional tips that you would like to share (Yes, I know you won't give up all of your secrets and I don't mind and understand).

Thanks in advance.

If it is going backwards you have your keys setup wrong.

The settings are not setup wrong because I can fly with it fine but when I first get in the plane I have to push the throttle all of the way in to keep from going backwards and then once I get going it works fine.

I've got an old Microsoft Sidewinder FF.  It's a great joystick, but for some reason I still can't fly worth shit.  That's probably just me, though.

The Logitech Extreme 3D Pro is good. $30 US Dollars for it. I had a problem with mine after a year: the springs in it broke and now it's not as sensitive or as responsive.

If you've got $100 to spare, the Saitek X52 is supposed to be God's gift to joysticks. It has electronic sensors in the stick instead of spring-mechanical, so it supposedly lasts a lot longer. It also has a seperate throttle, which I find a lot more practical than the combined throttle-and-joystick of the Extreme 3D Pro (very uncomfortable to use both the throttle and stick at the same time on the Extreme 3D).

Just so you know, getting a joystick won't automatically make you a better pilot. What it will do is that it will make the learning process a bit easier, and it will make flying easier. If you take two equal-skilled pilots, one on keyboard/keyboard+mouse and one with a good joystick, the guy with the stick will win. Take a very skilled Keyboard pilot against a so-so Joystick pilot, the keyboard pilot will likely win.

If you can find any possible way to justify an X52 you'll never regret doing so. It takes awhile to get used to, I've had mine for a month & have just started (as of yesterday) to fly online. Stick to SP for awhile & you'll get really used to how things work but $115 is disgustingly high for just playing BF2 (I play IL-2 Sturmovich too)

*Edit*: btw there's something weird about the backwards/forwards thing your talking about but there isn't anything you can do to fix it, I was told it's just the way BF2 has the controls setup.

Saitek Cyborg Evo (price:£20) is the most reliable.. you don't need to calibrate it regulary (like I had to do with Logitech Wingman Force 3D which cost me £45). Logitech died after 4 months of using. I've been using Saitek for  over a year now and it still works like new.
I'll put it in this way.. if you buy joystick go for Saitek.. if you want a mouse, buy Logitech. Saitek imho makes best joysticks.
