(Not defending Alienware) ... but, does the Alienware computer come to your home as a bunch of parts, or as a complete unit?  What about an operating system?  That's $200 you forgot ...

That extra $400 or so pays for assembly, OS installation, testing, etc.    You may want to do this yourself, or you may want to pay someone to do it.

Edit:  after considering the OS, it is a $257 difference.

tis true, but 400? how about 200, or 150. 100 for the OS and 50% for installation.

i built my comp at home in 30 mins. that wagers maybe 20, 50 for the outlandish.

the alienware comp comes as is built and ready to use...just take it outa the box and plug her in...

I bought one at the start of the year cost me 3500 Euro just for the CPU no keyboard or monitor...and all I gota say it the POWER !!!!!! of the thing is unreal...playing BF2 or BF2142 is a pleasure when you got everything to the max...really makes the game more enjoyable..I'd recomment Alienware to anyone !

Not much of a diffrence to be concerned about. Besides, everything from newegg is "almost like" what alienware uses. Of course newegg will be cheaper... they use cheaper equipment

Of the $257 difference, figure 2 hours or $100 for assembly labor ("loaded" rate might be $50 an hour) and you still have to allocate money for tech support, facilities, etc.    Probably looking at more like $50 to $100 in profit (3-7%).

how is it cheaper?  it's the same components?  ??????

and if i was buying an alienware i surely wouldn't get that vid card, but i'm sure the upgrade would cost $200 more than what the card actually costs.  build your own FTW!!!

What about the cost of shipping each individual  newegg component? What about potential RMA's ?   So for a few hundred more you get a fully working / tested build as opposed to having to do it all yourself... So there is the tradeoff.  I built my own myself, so for me I wouldn't mind building. With regard to  the headaches  that happened along the way,  I could do without them,  and there were headaches all along the way. I bought from newegg, and  I had to rma multiple components. This took extra time and added additional costs to my builds bottom line. To someone who doesnt want to go that route and wants the peace  of mind of getting basically plug in and play system, to be honest it looks like a good deal to me.  IMHO.
With regard to warranties, rather than have to deal with all the individual warranties from the newegg build the entire alien would be covered.  In the long run  the added up peace of mind from alien just can make sense for someone who wants to spend more time on the computer not just working on it.... IMHO

btw, its all outdated tomorrow anyway right? wink

looks like its all about the handhelds anyway..

i've bought numerous components from newegg and never had to rma, *knocks on wood* and am expecting a new power supply tommorrow.  guess if i built people computers for a living my luck would run out, but i don't.   and i almost always wait till there is free shipping offered.  most recently, my monitor i didn't pay for along with a headset i purchased.  just wait and it will happen.   and how can  you argue about reading the product reviews at newegg.  i stay away from products that have less than 70% buyer rating.  if you buy a power supply (or any product) that has only negative reviews, then you deserve to be screwed over for being stupid!

40% is just on the product itself.  Alienware has to spend money elsewhere (advertising, customer service, etc) therefore lowering that 40% drastically.

Alienware is a complete ripoff for anyone who knows anything about computers, or even a little bit about how to build them. However, it's not such a ripoff to the less-knowledged people who only want a good computer with newer parts (That don't say Dell on them) and have the money to spend on them.

Newegg sucks. Check out Zipzoomfly.com. They have equal base prices on products with most of them being a little less expensive... but the kicker is that Zip doesn't have sales tax and they DON'T charge for standard 6-7 day delivery. Plus they have the same return policies for broken products, etc. No tax and shipping charges can cut out hundreds of dollars if you're buying a full system at once.

A much better comparison:

Alienware hardware:
AMD FX-62
Doesnt specify mobo
2GB DDR2 PC6400 RAM
Either two 7900GT's in SLI, or two 7950GX2's in SLI
EIther 7200RPM HDD, or Raptors in RAID 0
and like a 30" monitor
Around 6000$

Here's what I threw togethor real quick:
mobo - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6813135024 - $129.95
cpu - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6819103751 - $319.00
ram - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6820231065 - $239.00
hdd - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6822148140 - 94.99 (x2) $189.99
video card - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6814161038 - $484.99
psu - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6817128009 - $159.99
case - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6811133155 - $179.99
monitor - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6824009089 - $639.99
dvd rom - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6827106027 $18.99
keyboard - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6823126179 - $71.99
mouse - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6826104191 - $45.99

total - $2479.87

EDIT: Links fixed, some things were revised as I made this list a while ago for another site - so some items are no longer carried by Newegg.

P.S. With a 32" screen, it is still way cheaper than the Alienware.

But you also know exactly how it was built, you know all the problems that came from building it, and you know every detail that went into putting that computer together that big companies might hide from you.
