I'm not going to recommend it, but just about every graphics student will pirate their copy of Photoshop to learn off of. Adobe's aware of it, but they won't really start caring about it until you start trying to sell Photoshop images without having a license.

If you want to be legit all the way, learn off of Photoshop Elements (~$100) and later pick up a $500 copy of CS2 or whatever's out.

if adobe is asking $500 for a fucking program, they deserve to get ripped off. i mean what the fuck do they expect. its fuckhole monopolies of programs as to why torrents are out there. they'd probably sell many more legit copies if they sold it for $50 compared to the $500 price tag and up they are asking. with a low price like that they might actually get people to buy it that want to learn it, and don't care about wasting $50 if they can't do it. adobe ftl
