My cousin just got some nasty problems with his laptop. Everytime he turns it on it restarts, so I think it has to be virusses. The people at the store wants to reformat it, but he has a lot of homework and photos from trips, that he wants to save. But he then asks me what to do. Do not know, why he did not ask the guys at the shop. Maybe they are having vacation. But if you can not acces the laptop to retrieve the files, then how can you get them. Do you need to take the hd out or what.

Thanks.

Question?  Did he back up any of the files or does he have a system restore?

take the hard drive out and transfer the information to a different computer and then reformat it

Do not know. But what is the first thing, you think he should do.

Well he just tells me, that the computer shuts off.

Load up un Safe mode, If he can run a virus check, see if that clears the issue,
Also did he install any new programs at all?

Overheat? Wait, it's winter... but still could be a cooling problem.

What are the chances of him getting a virus like this, if he has not downloaded any file.

Slim unless he was on a dodgy porn/serial site

Well my cousin just said, that he has not downloaded anything, and has not been at some dirty site.
So I advised him not to reformat it as one of his mates said, but contact the store and make them look for hardware errors.

Does it just reboot after the boot screen or does it start loading windows then restart?

If its the latter I had the same problem and it was overheating. How old is the laptop?

I dont think you can just take the hard drive out and plug it into another machine. Most laptop drives are not standard IDE. What I would suggest doing is if he has windows 98/95 on it, Boot up with a DOS disk. If you don't have one you can get one from http://www.bootdisk.com/ and if he has homework on there, there is another idea. If this is XP or Windows 2000, Get his original Windows 2000/XP cd and put it in and go to emergency recovery console. Try running fixboot and fixmbr. Also when you hit F8 you can also try running Last known good configuration.

Your last possible option I can think of is to get a null modem cable and creating a Ghost Client/Server hookup and making an ghost image of the PC on a known clean machine with the latest virus software and definations and he should be able to pull the data from the ghost image then you can do a clean install of the OS on his laptop.

1) does any message etc pop up when/just before it restarts (no matter how briefly)?
2) what was the very last thing he installed on the laptop?
