So I'm in the process of looking for new computer parts so I can build my own. Of course, I first checked out newegg. They have the cheapest stuff I've seen so far. But recently I went with my dad to the local computer store/repair shop and we talked about the new Core 2s etc. and he mentinoed that he (the store owner) doesn't like newegg, not because they're cheaper, but because he doesn't trust them. He says they take out parts of computers and remanufacture and sell as new. So I'm asking all of you who have dealt with them (please no secondhand opinions) if you trust them. I read a lot of customer reviews(but you never know who writes those) and most of them talk about RMAing which if I understand correctly is them sending back a defective part and getting a free replacement. But on the other hand a lot also talk about getting a good product quickly. SO what I'm looking for is your opinion of them. The store owner told me I should only buy a processor ro something else that is simple and that they can't open and remove parts.

Edit:

SUMMARY: What do you think of Newegg.com? would or wouldn't you buy from them? if you would, is there any specific items you wouldn't buy?(processors, RAM, Motherboard, etc.)

i buy everything from there. everything appears to be factory sealed. i have never had a problem with a part, but friends who have had  issues have nothing but good things to say about their customer service.

I've only bought one thing from them, not because of me not trusting them, but just because I had the money. 2 wireless usb routers. Held up well, but died a year later due to me breaking them.

I got a friend of mine to order a 160gb external hd from them and he's never complained.

I'd buy from them until I ran into trouble. Thats all I can offer here.

I'd buy anything from Newegg. Their prices are great, their customer service has been great. I trust them 100 times more than I trust any bricks-and-mortar store. Why? Because they provide room for customer reviews, and their customers are not only VERY vocal but VERY tech-savvy. If Newegg screwed over one of its customers, you can bet that everyone would hear about it.

Compare that to Best Buy or your local computer shop. Customers are not tech savvy, so the store is not forced to be as knowledgeable, nor as careful, nor as price-competitive. (Customer comment overheard yesterday when helping my gf pick out a PDA at CompUSA: "HP computers. Are they as good as Intel?" CompUSA computer guy: "Yes.") And if a store screws over a customer, who hears about it? Either no one, because it's over the phone, or everyone within earshot, if the customer confronts them in the store. Meanwhile Newegg is under constant scrutiny.

Regarding your local computer store guy's comments - come on. Newegg is among his most significant competitors and is the figurehead of what's shrinking his profitability and driving him out of business. Of course it's in his best interest to plant seeds of doubt into his customers' heads. That's just smart sales.

I'd buy anything from newegg - I've bought ram, mobo, CPU, headphones, keyboard, a tower case, and multiple HDDs, and have never had an issue. Delivery is damn fast too. Definitely my favorite retailer, period.

They're great as far as I'm concerned. I've bought tons of stuff from them;  RAM, HDD's, mobos, cases, graphics cards, processors, mice...you name it. Never had a problem with anything, ever.

Hmm he doesn't "trust" his competition.. imagine that lol. If a salesman  is trying trying to sell you they  would do everything they  could to downplay a competitor. Did you really expect him to say "yes they are cheaper  and with that 100%  guarantee  who wouldn't buy from them?"
I wouldn't be suprised if he actually buys from them and markes it up.
Newegg has a 100% money back guarantee. I have NEVER had a prob with them I have bought from them many times over.. cpu/ vga / ram to list a few.    I just bought a new case from them the Antec 900,  and it was here in TWO days.

Just go to newegg and read the reviews on any particular item you are interested in to get feedback.

everything i have purchased from newegg (more than 10 items) has been factory sealed and in perfect working order.  they do  have "oem" items for sale, which i believe is the item itself without the factory box or any other item that comes with it.  i have never purchased "oem" as i don't feel comfortable doing that.  But you can trust them, don't worry about what some computer store guy will tell you.  obviously he wants you to purchase from him so he can get all that markup from you.

I bought my computer there and built it, 3 of my friends bought products from there and built it from the beginning...no problem . In fact that I like newegg so much I would give it a 5/5. The open items he was talking about was OEM products which it would tell you...The guy doesn't like newegg because it is competition to him. He knows that newegg is cheaper and better, so he puts it down in ways other people don't know. I knew which products are oem and which is retail. It will tell you...

Your local computer store won't be there in 2 years, Newegg will. Not bash all local pc retailers/repair shops, but most of them unknowledgeable crooks. Ignorance is the only thing keeping most in business.

I have bought plenty of stuff from Newegg without issue (both oem stock and retail).

What that dude said was bullshit. If Newegg did that they'd never be able to stay in business with all the complaints they'd be getting. Used or refurbished product has to be sold as such by law. Otherwise it's fraud and you could sue the pants off of them.

Personally I've only ever bought my parts from ZipZoomFly. Usually their prices = Newegg's, and both will have free 3 day shipping, but ZZF often has 2 day for $1.99.

Yeah just because it is open and wrapped in plastic and doesn't have warranty doesn't mean it is bad. Just don't take chances with things over a hundred dollars.

stillhouse....Zip zoom fly is cool and all I have been there, but it doesn't have nearly as good rep as newegg.

Alright thanks everyone. (more opinions welcome of course) Maybe this will help convince my dad to help me go through with the Newegg stuff. He likes to keep business local since he's a small business owner himself, but I'm trying to get him to realize $300 overall is a big difference and if he's making me pay for it, I'd rather go cheap.... I wouldnt' mind goign to the store for repairs or anything, but if I'm buying raw materials I'm going cheap.

What you are describing sounds like an OEM part...similar to what a repair shop would buy for thier stock to build systems. This type of product does not have a box, etc. Beleive me, I've bought a tons of parts across 6 different system builds form Newegg to know the local yocal is FOS.

A hundred dollars is a large difference, go for Newegg or online retailers that are well known.

Yeah I am describing oem, cheaper and not better cause retail is the best, just good enough to not fail you.

Yeah, cmon.....the computer salesman is totally gonna talk smack about anything that competes with his business. I bought a 24" Samsung LCD monitor for Xmas from Newegg, and it kicks ass. No problems at all, and it got here quick.

Oh and alot of the reviews at newegg are great, just don't listen to those who are like " I overclocked my core2 4.0 and is crapped out on me 1/5 stars it sucks" Alot of people there are idiots and don't know how to do it right (not saying that core 2 can't be clocked that high, but it does need proper cooling. If alot of people have bad rating and say the exact same thing then there is something wrong with the product.

Yeah, for a lot of folks Newegg is the tried-and-true option, but I always like to shop around. A few of the guys over at abit's forum turned me on to ZZF because they've had good experiences with them.

Another reason I went with ZZF is when I was ordering my CPU no one else had it in stock. This was right after the prices dropped and there was a run on them. Even The Egg had been out for almost 2 weeks.

I bought all the parts and replacement parts for my first build from newegg.com.  the only reason i needed the replacements was because i ran out of money in the middle of ordering (car trouble) and had to wait a while to get the cash flow again.  Got a new CPU that was too good for the mobo.

anyway, newegg is great.  I was told to use pricewatch but i always found newegg to be the cheapest or near the cheapest on there and the most reliable.  As for OEM, it can save you hundreds of dollars but you have to be confident in what you are doing to get those.
