OK well despite being a BF2 fan boy, i got 2142 for Christmas to see what all the hype was about and make up my own mind.

So im installed and patched and ready to go, but is there any thing i should do?

Maps to look for / avoid?

Best classes?

Best / Worst Weapons?

Good first unlocks?

Any general tips appreciated!

Thanks

Don't get the ganz or zeller: little/no advantage over the standards

Don't get the AA unlock for engi.....little use for it because of the lack of (and use of) air vehicles. If you want to be an engi the pilum is a must, a great gun.

You will get your first 8 unlocks VERY quickly so it doesn't really matter in what order.
I recommend getting the lambert carbine for recon and one of the assault guns.

edit: Try and work towards the basic badges at the start which will help you get extra points. Keep playing for a while and before you know it you will have the time requirements for the vet badges.

Get used to the pin requirements because if you're ontrack for one, knowing what you need to get it can provide those extra few points!

Titan destructor pin: take a gunship/pilum/AA   and destroy 4 titan guns - gives you an easy 20 points, I do it at the beginning of every round, takes 2minutes max.

I think you'll find things alot more balanced in 2142, so there aren't any really bad maps / weapons this time around, IMO.  Just put in the hours trying all the different kits and maps to see what you prefer.  Personally, i played alot of medic/support to start with, the kyrlov (spelling??) is a good base weapon as medic, as is the bianchi for titan corridor defense as support.  Just remember to always throw down those hubs at all opportunities!

edit: oh, and as said above, avoid the Ganz (support), is sucks.  I actually like the zeller though.  Go for the Voss if unlocking assault, its a great gun, better than the other option (name escapes me).  And in the engineer class, the pilum is amazing, try unlock that as early as u can.

Same, but not first.

The first thing you HAVE TO unlock is the Grenade->Sprint Upgrades.

They are the best unlocks because you can use them no matter what kit you pick.

Sprint upgrades ftw.

Yeah, i forgot about nades - get them....but don't spam them!

You DO NOT need the sprint upgrades! I've just unlocked them and I'm a commissar silver.

They don't help for fun or points as much as the other unlocks.

It's a spawn beacon that your squad can spawn on. To be honest I would only get it if you have some mates on ts you play with.....thats when it's usefull.

BUT, you have to destroy it before you can put another one down....which is annoying, and wastes precious time!

and yeah...get nades.

After nades, pick a side of assault to do.

The Baur H is the G3 of the future.

The Voss L AR is the G36E of the future.

Krylov AR is the AK-101 of the future (stock for PAC).

You pick: damage or spamability.

(Or get the Pilum, no reason to get the support trees first, as the kit itself doesn't really change)

Baur is good for single shot long range

Voss is good for close combat where you are likely to come across multiple enemies.

Krylov looks disgusting    and it's just going to get nerfed anyway.

And get the Clark shotgun...just 'cos it's cool!

Belgrade is great for infantry as is Camp Gib.  Avoid Fall of Berlin, it's has the same ridiculous choke points that Berlin had in BF1942.

For vehicle action - Minsk, Shuhia Taiba, or Suez Canal.

Best class - All depends on what you like to play.  Since you're a BF2 vet, stick with what worked in BF2.  I was primarily a Medic or AT in BF2, in 2142 I'm Assault (with medhub) and Engineer.

Best weapons - For flag capping action I love the Voss for Assault - 40 round clip and fast rate of fire.  Worst? Hmmm, not really any bad weapons that I can think of.  It's all personal preference.

First unlocks - get the player abilities (nades, longer sprint, quicker sprint recharge) they'll save your life time and time again.  As a new player, more experienced players with those unlocks will be able to chase you down easily.

General tips - T
Squad up, the game is configured to reward team players.  If you're squad leader, please please please hit "T" and set flags or silos to attack or defend.  When your squad heals, supplies ammo, or kills the enemy inside the radius of the highlighted objective, they get extra points AND you get extra points.  Defending the middle silo on Sidi Power Plant I only played the last half of a round and racked 50+ squad leader points in addition to my team points and kill points.

The squad leader beacon is a great asset for a squad, especially on the big vehicle maps.  Hoofing it across the map on foot is NOT fun.

The hover tank is awesome, learn to use it and you'll rack up points.

Shoot for the back of anything, unlike BF2, it makes a difference.

That's all for now, lock n load soldier!

I have a question about the support guns.

How do you control them? I know they can be accurate, but it takes forever for you crosshairs to become smaller (meaning more accuracy).

I'm always running around the titan, and then go prone and shoot at an enemy, but by the time my gun becomes accurate enough, I'm dead. I need some beginner training lol.

Crouch instead.  No lag in accuracy like there is if you go prone.

EDIT: Now I've created a monster.  You're going to be running around racking up kills.

Seriously you just hold down fire over the enemy....it's so sad that they work that way. Way to good.

And yes....I want them to be nerfed. Kay.

yeah, don't get the Zeller, make that one the last unlock on your list.  Its nothing different, except you can blow up RDX, Claymores and Sentry guns.  It has only 3 rounds in it.  The sound and animation is nice but I would get the Lambert or go to the Assault class and get the Baur.  Get the Baur first over the Voss.

But that's another thing. The guns overheat way to fast.
