Apparently the Whitehouse doesn't like the anser;
The Park Service has been asked, by several Bush appointees, not to say, because it might offend creationists.......
WTF

I don't even know what to say, except that it is a ridiculous attempt to suppress information. If you don't believe the world is older than the bible says it is, it doesn't give you the right to supress information that might show otherwise.......

Fuck Religious Fundamentalists, no matter what religion they feel the need to proselatize.

So are we discussing the age of the Grand Canyon or just piling on GSB yet again?

Excerpt:
The rubidium- strontium method, however, has dated the Cardenas basalt at one billion years and the lava flow on top of the canyon at 1.3 billion years. This is clearly impossible! Rocks on the bottom of the canyon are 300 million years younger than very recent rocks on the very top of the canyon! These dates were obtained by ICR from samples they sent to several independent dating labs. Something is amiss, either in the interpretation of the rocks, the dating methods, or both.

That's politics for ya. The very essence is so bland and neutral that it makes water spicy.

The dating methods do have several problems, but the implications are still that the earth is much older than young-earth creationists would have you believe.  The old-earth ones at least have a modicum of rationality to them.

I think the question would be is how long it took the river to cut the canyon out?

This, my friends, is suppression of information due to religion.  Didn't other countries rules by their religion do this?

And doesn't this mean that the government is supporting a specific religion over another?

Don't get me wrong, I'm LDS, but I still believe in all these things, such as OLDER THAN 7000 YEARS STUFF.  It's hard to comprehend anything odler than 7000 years, let alone millions, but hey, the data fits.

I believe in God, but the peculiar creationist idea that the Earth must be a certain age is just skewed. Who's to say how long 'God' spent doing anything, and what His idea of time would be?

Pretty much....  If I were Christian, I'd probably see the idea of "6 days" in Genesis as a metaphor, not an exact figure.  It's like how the term "year" meant different things to different cultures.  You have people in the Old Testament that live for hundreds of years, but in many cultures, a year was effectively a season in our terminology.

Didn't the creationists die out ages ago?

I think if you believe in God, it would be a bit sacreligious to tell god how long a day is. I mean, how long's a day if you haven't created the sun yet, let alone the Earth.

And BTW:

*sigh* Mormons.  The real name of the religion is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, or LDS, but since the main difference between us and Christianity is another book called the Book of Mormon, so we're, apparently, Mormons.

Oh right, sorry if I offended you in asking, and please excuse my ignorance. I've heard both names used, but don't recognise it from the LDS acronym.

Most Christians I know believe in evolution, albeit controlled by God. I think that's a good compromise, there's no need to abandon ones faith or reality just because they aren't entirely compatible.

It's funny that they asked that the age of the canyon be suppressed so creationists aren't offended, but didn't ask the church to remove Genesis in case it offends everyone else.

Mormonism is an interesting religion, but I have to admit...  the LDS acronym is kind of awkward.  It's kind of close to LD (learning disability).

You apparently haven't visited the "Bible Belt" in the southern US. These people believe in creationism, scoff at facts, laugh at truth and generally don't brush their teeth often enough...

I live in the Bible Belt, and yes, creationism is still sadly alive.  I think a large portion of creationists are actually in Kansas though.  They apparently made a big stink over there with some school boards.
