i realize this is a really stupid question but here goes,
i've got a intel c2d 1.83ghz, but i was just wondering;since i without any trouble can run games that require 2-3 ghz processors, is there a way to compare it to a single core processor?
do you muliply it by two or is there any other way of doing it?

/retarded question

C2D is pretty much the best performance for the price on the market.

You need to understand that core clock means nothing. It's all about core architecture. The reason you see these "2-3 ghz" game requirements is because the Pentium 4 processors were very inefficient and simply relied on extremely high core clocks to match the performance of an Athlon XP/64 running a 1 ghz slower clock. Performance is what matters, not core clock. That said, C2D is the best mainstream CPU on the market.

Also the c2ds overclock like you wouldnt believe. anandtech managed to get a 201% performance boost from the bottom end c2d (2% performance drop from the c2d extreme).

Only thing is you need a mobo that unlocks the multiplyer settings (like the ASUS P5B).

So if you wanna wang out a few quid on a mobo and some cooling you're laughing.

http://www.anandtech.com/mb/showdoc.aspx?i=2822 <-- also worth reading

EDIT : BTW Fancy is right, clock speeds (for the much part) mean jack shit, your 1.8Ghz c2d will crap on 90% of CPUs and 99.9% if you OC it Hard to believe that little thing can potentially hit 3.8Ghz (probabaly closer to 3Ghz just with air cooling)

just to clear up a few things, it's a laptop, so a mobo and cooling is kinda out of the question, besides it's not the C2D e6300, it's the t5600 one, so i guess i'm not that lucky

EDIT: Changed the link for a slightly better benchmark.

That is a good question though... comparing a dual-core chip to a single-core chip. Is there any way to accurately do it besides benchmarking?

Like say you were comparing a 3800+ and a 3800+ X2. Any way to do it besides benching them both?

What you're asking is not a simple thing - different applications, even different games, will treat single core processors differently to multi-core processors.  For example, Quake 4 will make better use of a multi-core cpu than a single core, because of the way it's been designed.  However, BF2 won't.  Since a multi-core cpu generally has less processing power per core than a single core processor, BF2 would actually work better on the 3800+ than the 3800+ X2.

And there's almost nothing around that will make use of all four cores on the Intel Kentsfield or AMD 4x4, yet, so don't be wasting your money on those unless you're heavily into Folding @ Home and have money to burn.

Let me put it this way. I have a P4 EE 3.73 running @ 4.52. My other C2d @ 2.93 smokes it, big time.

I don't hate him. For he might happen to give me his "spare" system instantly. <prays>

Actually I think my girlfriend has claimed it. Thats a whole lotta power for just checking mail and shopping online..lol. Actually, it is now my media PC also. I use it to record TV shows, burning dvds, music, pictures, etc.

My PC does that too - plus, it probably needs less power - time for a little economic exchange?

i have the same proc in my lappy as well and it is way sufficient for games (even though it will usually fail the min required hardware test). you should be ok
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.
