Can someone in here please help clarify how this sort of connection works? I have the yellow crossover cable. I don't know if I need anything else? I'm trying to connect my laptop to my desktop to transfer a ton of music. Both computers have WinXP Media Center 2005. They both have ethernet cards. Basically I'm asking for someone to give me a step by step walkthrough. I've tried googling it, but theres no way for me to ask questions in between, so that kind of kills the motivation. Please help?
surely a simple ethernet cross over cable will work.......
I ran the network setup wizard, but this website I went to, has a step that for some reason I can't get. How do you connect to the net if you're ethernet is taken up by the crossover cable?
Control Panel > Network Connections > Local Area Connection > Properties > TCP/IP
Set the IPs to 10.1.1.2 and 10.1.1.3, and have the same subnet on both systems.
Control Panel > System > Computer Name
Change both systems to the workgroup, WORKGROUP.
Now you should be able to ping each other. Start > Run > cmd
type: ping 10.1.1.2 (and 3 on the other end)
If that works, next is to set up sharing. I usually make a folder right on the Desktop called Shared.
(on a folder) Properties > Sharing
1. Yes I understand the risks, skip the wizard
2. Share this folder over the network
3. Allow network users to change my files (which allows to put files in a folder over the network).
Once you share a folder, the computer becomes visible in My Network Places.

How you connecting to the interwebz now?I ran the network setup wizard, but this website I went to, has a step that for some reason I can't get. How do you connect to the net if you're ethernet is taken up by the crossover cable?
My state was founded by Batman. Your opinion is invalid.
I'm connected to the web now because I disconnected the cables. My laptop has a wireless though. The website with the tutorial has steps for setting up the host computer for shares internet access.
