I'm sorry, but when I see you make use that little of electricity that you often see your own breath, it's no wonder a little thing like a PC doubles or triples your electricity bill.
I mean, if you probably warm/cook your meals with gas, there are hardly any Watt-eaters left, probably...

dude you get off lightly with your electic bills, i get a ass wooping because my parents have to pay £300-£500 a month just for electric, and of course this is ALOT due to my bf2 gaming etc etc, of course not all of it is from gaming but you know, still steap!

I've done a calculation.

My PSU can provide 480W (500W PSU, so it's a nice efficiency, aye?), means it consumes 500W for an output of 480W. My system does not require any power near 480W (95W for CPU, 46W GPU, <1W for both case fans, ~1W for CPU fan, 13W for one HDD, + 2 optical drives + mobo supply... Still, I doubt that this would ever be close to 480, but with the LCD screen, it maybe will come close to 500 allover.

So let's say, I need 500W per hour, that would be 0.5KWh to pay. Means about 7 to 8 cents (€), since 1 KWh is about 0.15€ for us (or lower...).

Now, a day has about 24 hours of which my PC is of course not always on, but let's assume it's about 8 hours (might even happen on weekends). 8 times 15 is 120, means that's 1.20€ a day, the average month would be about 36€ a month.
That's quite a lot! But nowhere close to a TV or an electric heating system...

keep in mind that all power that the pc eats will eventually end up as heat anyway, so you wont have to spend as much to keep your house nice and warm if you play a lot

i have a 450 watt psu and last month i had a bunch of work and i was rarely on the computer. that month was around 50$. This month, no outlet usage was added and i had played bf2 quite a bit due to time off for holidays. This month was 80$. I am 100% sure it is because of the computer. would it have anything to do with the extension cord that has about 8 outlets on it( maybe the things too old compared to modern energy savers?) Im not sure. but 30$ a month is 30$. Anymore explanations?

ask mythbusters and they will probably air "best way to conserve electricity while playing bf2 for more than 10 hours" in about a month. Hope you get your answers there.

[Off Topic]Is your heating and electricity bills the same over there? We have separate billing here.

Turn all the lights off, and set the thermometer to 60.  It's what my dad does.
The house feels good when it's on 60.  My parents put it on 70 to 75 and it's fucking sweaty ridiculous in here.
me too! i can't stand it hot, i'd rather have it too cold than too hot. That way i can at least layer up IF i get cold, but i usually don't wear a jacket when it's 30 degrees out, at most a hoodie.

Actually, i open up a window when i'm on the computer because it heats up my room to 70 - 80 degrees!

Why incorporate the word "fag" into your name?

Because you, as you are from Iceland, are probably using hot water to heat your flats/houses, right?
In Austria, though we don't have hot water naturally, also use some similar system, based on something we call "Kraft-Wärme-Kopplung" which means something like power-heat-combination, that is installed in some of our caloric power plants. The ascending hot steam is warming water pipes and under high pressure (that high, that water stays liquid at 300°C, which is quite a lot, actually) it is being delivered through a pipe system to flats. Single family houses won't be heated this way, I guess.
And as I also guess, in the States, or generally where people do not tend to receive electricity from caloric plants but from nuclear ones, heating either with gas/oil or even electricity seems to be very common, electricity especially in the US, since they got enough energy anyway, aight?

it matters not whether you get a 750W PSU or a 1.5Kw PSU, your internal components will still drain the same amount of energy.

the only way to reduce anything is to replace the componenets with ones that use less power - but that will bomb your performance, unless you can upgrade to more power efficient parts (eg 7900 instead of 7800- new unreleased 8800 instead of the current range) or simply play less.  CnQ can help save a tiny bit when you are not playing but dont expect big reductions just for enabling that.

And dont forget, comparing your bill with when you are out is not effective.  Just being in means you are using extra light, extra heat, boiling the kettle more, putting the tv on, playing your hifi etc etc....it all adds up to more than youd think.
