OK. i am having trouble deciding what to do

Here are my system specs

Pentium 4 3.06 GHZ
2 GB ram
80 GB 7200rpm HD
Geforce 6600 LE
3.5Mbps broadband

I am having trouble playing on the BF2142 EU server. With a ping of 30-40 i am experiencing really jerky
graphics to the point of unplayability.

Can't really afford new PC at the moment and was wondering whether a new GFX Card (7600 GT 256)
would make any noticeable difference

What do you think?

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated

1) its your hardware i dont know whey jerkyness happens at such low ping but it does.
2) how much money do you have to spend on video card
3) is your 6600le pci-e or agp
4) if pcie i recommend a 7900 or 7950gt

what are the differences between PCI-E or AGP?, and how do I know which 1 my motherboard has?

Thanx!

It is probably AGP (I think the 6 series where AGP anyways).  Differences really is just PCI is better than AGP, but the card the guys recomended (I fourth it btw ) can beat some PCI cards.  Though if you wanna stick to nvidia 7900GS is a good card to.

PCI-e has a speed of 16x in most motherboards, makeing the data transfer rate much faster than the older AGP slot

There are actually two types of PCI-e slot.. the smaller 1x speeds slot which isnt used for graphics though

AGP has a speed of 8x if its version 3.0, you can tell which it is by opening the side of your case and looking at the slot your graphics card is in (usualy the biggest card in there smack bang in the middle)

The agp slot has like, a small sectioned bit at the back iirc, whereas the PCI-e one is at the front, also PCI-e is closer to the back of the case

AGP slots are usualy brown in colour, too

Best i can describe for you

AGP is going out of date now, and its going fast...if you need to upgrade, and you have the cash, i suggest a full make-over with a PCI-e slot & card, as you will be able to upgrade much better in the future!

Hope it helped, im really tired too, so forgive me if i gave some miss-information

Edit: By the way i have the 7800GS OC AGP from BFG...and it runs pretty sweet, got it overclocked from 400 to 460 core... and it plays bf2 maxed out, and would prolly handle 2142 with ease (it handled the demo great anyway) so AGP cards still pack a punch!

Is it just this server that is giving you problems?  How about singleplayer?  If singleplayer is OK, then it is not your graphics card.

Seems to be mostly 64 player maps which is what the EU server runs. Titan mode - forget it.

Thanks again for all the opinions.

Most motherboards only support 8x.. only new motherboards are accepting full 16(x16) usually..

Not true.. you are thinking of SLI where it was both lanes x8 but now it is becoming both lanes x16

The x1950 pro is the best AGP card on the market, and is superior to the 7600GT, but then the 7600 is cheaper, and gives a better performance/price imo.  7900GS is a better comparison, but again the x1950 still beats it, depends on you own personal belief, the Nvidia is still a credible alternative to the x1950 and is what I would take over the ATI card for the simple fact I dont see the point shelling out on older tech, 7600GT and save yourself a bit of cash.  Will post a link in a while, of a 7600GT going for half the price of the ATI card.

I had a computer that had:
160GB HD, SATA
6600 GeForce
P4 3.something
5XX MB RAM DDR
350W PSU
and some shit motherbaord.

I built a new one but kept the HD now its
160GB HD
Intel E6600 or w/e
GeForce 8800
Amazing motherboard
new sound card [cheap one tho, 30$]
2 case fans and new cooler for CPU
2 GB DDR2 of Ram
500W PSU

And for a shocking: 1700$ [my country is a ripoff ]

and now im getting better FPS with everything maxed out rather then when i had everything on low on my old computer

________
But since you dont have the money just buy a 7600 like u wanted to
