Here's a philosophical question that I was kicking around with my buddies. In the US (expect for some parts of nevada) why is it illegal for a prostitute to have consentual sex with a stranger for money, yet porn stars can do the exact same thing without breaking any laws. Does this mean that if a prostitute carries around a camcorder and films the sexual act they can then get away with prostitution by calling themselves porn stars?

Possibly? I think it has to do with freedom of expression. A constitutional right...for now. On camera it can be defended that its artistic expresssion. one on one, who are you expressing it to? at least in court it won't hold up.

well the way i see it, prostitution is illegal because the goverment can't tax the money generated from it, but if it was legalized, we'd see fewer women being forced into prostitution, especially through drugs because we would have legit and government inspected brothels instead of dirty corner chick heads.
Its similiar to the marijuana legalization argument. Legalize it and stop criminals from controlling the industry.
Legalizing prostitution is, in my opinion, a good thing. Brothels and such are much safer than being on the street. I went into a brothel in Spain (we thought it was a stripclub, and apparently brothels are legal), and the security was good and the hookers looked to be in decent shape haha. But seriously, compared to the hookers on the street on the way home, these girls looked healthy and way safer.

While I can't argue the strength of the law enforcement or how much the law even 'cares', but the legalization of prostitution here has done little to nothing. The government owned brothels were unpopular and fell out of business, yet the majority of prostitution rings and whore houses are owned by a man in Parliament (who also happened to get to his position through under-the-table money). There is still a lot (if not more) illegal prostitution (adult and child) that is going on around here.
Again, I can't exactly attest to the effectiveness of the law on this issue, so it may just be an internal problem.

In Canada (dont know about the US) prositution is technically legal. Its the solicitation of sex that is the illegal thing.
Aren't porn stars licensed and all that? I'm guessing they have been tested and everthing, prostitues haven't.
