I want to do an upgrade soon. I'll be getting an intel conroe 6300/6400, 7900gt, and a suitable motherboard. I was just wondering if a stick of OCZ platinum ram (DDR-400) would work in this rig, even if its a little slow.

Nar only DDR2 works with c2d's.

EDIT: If you can, push to a 6600, double the cache of those 2.

fine, then I'll stick with my AGP/754 system for now, buy an x1950pro, and save up for a proper DX10 upgrade in the summer. I've already spent 150 extra on a proper PSU, can't afford another 100+ for ram.

You are a liar. Some Core 2 Mobos support both DDR2 and DDR... Search for Asrock mobos, in their core 2 section, theres something called vista or something and it supports DDR2, DDR ram, PCI-E and AGP.

I've already ordered an x1950pro agp, I'll survive on my rig (amd 64 3000, 1x1GB ocz ram) till I can afford a full, proper overhaul. I had about 500 eurii's to spend on that upgrade, so I don't want to have to buy cheap stuff anyway.

Yeah is limited... but the fps loss between 16x and 4x is VERY litle, not even noticeable.

Problem is it wont support a 8800 series or anything..but if you look at the OP setup its not a problem, same for me

Its the only mobo that supports both agp and pcie, and c2d, aswell as ddr1 & 2 ram

You asked for it, and i delivered

I can see that it's useful, I admit I didn't even know these existed as all I look at is gaming rig stuff really, but looking at it all you're getting is his graphics downgraded (I'm willing to assume his current board is PCIe x16) in return for a new CPU, and for gaming that results in performance loss not gain

And in a few months I'd be going for DX10 gear anyway so it'd mean a new mobo anyway.

as i said, the loss isnt noticeable

look for benchmarks on the motherboard

Please, can someone explain me, how a board can work for 2 different types of RAM?
There's a difference between 184 and 240, you see...

it has 4 slots... two for DDR, and two for DDRII

@ cyborg: Not with the card he has,, keep in mind that the eye cant notice the difference between 40fps and 100fps

Actually, your eye can tell the difference between 40FPS and 100fps.

As I said, I've already ordered an x1950pro in agp format.

I just hope I can run games on proper settings untill the summer with said videocard, a 64 3000+, and a gig of ram.
