I had some trouble with my sound card so had to reload all the drivers for it. Ever since then BF2 will not start up, even after reinstalling. I run the Creative X-Fi XtremeMusic sound card and as that is the only change I can think of I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas or suggestions?

My system config in full:
AMD 64 FX-62 2.8GHz dual core
2 Gb RAM
nVidia GeForce 7900 GTX
X-Fi XtremeMusic 7.1

Ok I tried re-installing the drivers but still nothing having once again tried re-installing BF2 but thank you anyway joker for the help. And yes Richard I'm sure 2142 would run fine but I don't want to spend £25 on a BF2 mod.

Any other ideas?

This just started happening to me yesterday.  I get the splash screen right at the beginning but then the program doesn't load and it stays at the desktop.

Am reinstalling everything from scratch so will see if that helps.

That is exactly what I am getting at the moment. Its wierd as all my other games work fine, its just BF2 that has been screwed over by it.

Try going into device manager and disabling your sound card --  then go to hardware profiles  and create a new profile...then reboot into the profile without the sound card and see if BF2 loads then ...

Yeah, I have no idea why it's happening, i haven't changed any hardware or software.

edit: Uninstalled everything, deleted profiles and reinstalled vanilla and...it still doest work

This seems to be happening to alot of people recently. I've had the problem for a few days & have even reformatted & reinstalled windows & it still doesn't work. I called EA today & they wouldn't help me at all because I have 2 monitors & they don't "support" dual monitors. I tried uninstalling my second monitor & even reinstalled BF2 after that & still no

Its annoying cause as far as I'm aware i haven't made any changes to my computer.  It's quite worrying if it still doesn't work after a format.  What firewall, antivirus tools etc do you use?

All i can think of is that bf2 is sulking cause I've been playing rainbow six Vegas so much

Norton Firewall & Anti-Virus, that's never been a problem before though. I'm doing another manual delete & reinstall because I think I was missing a set of registry entries but I dunno... will let you know if I figure anything out. Reformat seems to work for everyone......except me of course

lol... i seriously cannot believe after everything you have tried you still cannot open BF2....

If the CTD still survives after a reformat that is a problem!

Did you try and play BF2 after installing all your programs again etc, or was it literally reformat,  drivers, BF2, patch....

You could try (if you havent already) disabling background processes... but you seem to have tried near enough everything already!

EDIT- Just read the last line you said in one of your posts..... Battlefield 2 runs in the processes afterwards.... I had that problem and solved it by renaming "BF2" (C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\BF2) to something else (I called mine Battlefield 2). NOTE- this means changing the shortcuts for BF2 aswell! I severly doubt the problem i had would still have occured after a manual reinstall AND a reformat, but it is probably worth a go

That got me thinking.  I used msconfig to limit the process running and it work!!!  without sound tho
So I'm closer, just need to find out which process(es) are conflicting.

Thanks for all the help, that's really cool of you but I think BF2 just doesn't like me anymore.....it's the only legitimate reason left

Reformat > Windows > Drivers > BF2 (first thing) > Fail (I'm seriously starting to think it's personal)

The BF2 Knifefest is tomorrow http://forums.bf2s.com/viewtopic.php?id=58328 & I've been waiting forever for that. If I can't get it tonight I'm going to get a new CD tomorrow, hopefully that'll work.
Everything that can be found on the internet or on EA's website I've tried. I spent an hour on the phone this afternoon with EA Tech support while he read every possible answer out of a book (disabling user process's, renaming the .exe, moving "Battlefield 2" to the desktop, etc).
I'll be sure to let yins know if I figure it out...

Motherboard drivers?  My video card didn't work until I installed mine - it became unstable and crashed a bit.
I saw Norton before, but didn't read it all...do you have Norton Internet Security?  That can be a problem.

Hahaha....big surprise there.

BF2 screwed up my video card drivers the other day. I was playing, then my screen went black, but I could still hear sounds, talk on TS, etc. I could even minimize and see my desktop, but BF2 was all black. So I closed out and then I couldn't start it again. So I restarted and I then had no video drivers installed.

I finally got it working   I had a feeling one of my anti virus programs was the cause so i uninstalled it and everything is fine.  I think part of the program was crashing in the background causing a big problem.

MagikTrik try running msconfig diagnostic or selective start to see if that works, if so then there's obviously some processes in the background obstructing bf2.

*sigh* got to go through the rigmarole of installing all the addons, boosters and patch now!
