Motorcyclist runs over sick seal in NZ

A hunt is on in New Zealand for a motorcyclist who deliberately ran over a sick seal, which later had to be put down.

Local woman Cheryle Blight told the Southland Times newspaper the seal was lying sick on a beach near Riverton, on New Zealand's South Island, on Saturday when a motorcyclist approached it, circled back, took a run up and ran over the mammal at speed.

"It wasn't as if you couldn't see (the seal). It was deliberately done," she said.

The motorcyclist rode away before he could be identified, leaving a tyre mark on the seal's back.

Department of Conservation duty officer Pete McClelland said the seal was already ill but had to be euthanased after the incident, which he described as "pretty sick".

Police have appealed for help to find the culprit, who could face a heavy fine under the Marine Mammals Protection Act.

Maybe he thought he was doing the seal a favor by ending its life because it was sick..

Although he wasn't very successful at it..

I've ran over birds by accident on my dirt bike, and I always circle back to see if they are in pain or will live, and if they won't survive I finish them. I'm not one to let a Animal suffer.

Sounds sick, whatever.

Yeah, a guy here in Sydney died from being bitten by an Eastern Brown snake whilst walking in parkland, I guess he didn't get an anti-venom in time, poor fellow.

Anyways, I lived in NZ for about 4.5 years, but I was in Auckland. Anyone here lives or used to live in Auckland?

I discovered a warp hole in my hometown in the US that led me directly to NZ.

I found a bike, and GTA style started to wreak havoc...

apparently, the seal was the only one they saw... I have learned through numerous hours of gameplay, that if you kill one person at a time, the cops will never catch on...

I don't think it's sick neccesarily. I saw a dying seal on an island and I felt for it but I wasn't going to interfere with nature. Euthanasing it would have been the humane thing to do, but they're not humans. It's ironic that in would be considered (by some) inhumane to euthanase a human. If I hit an animal in my car I'd go back and finish it off. I couldn't bare the thought of it lying there in pain for days until it died of dehydration.

You forgot to mention you've also got icebergs, and possums. If you want a poisonous mammal we can help you out, but we've only got the ones that lay eggs.
