I'm clueless.  My mic was working fine yesterday.  I come on to ventrillo today and it's not working.  I've googled and tried all the "recording" and "play back" stuff using the icon in my tray (next to the clock). I've pulled  out both jacks from my soundcard and put them both back in. Headset in the green, mic in the pink jacks. I can hear fine. I've tried control panel>sounds and audio>voice>test hardware and the meter doesn't move at all so its not taking in any sound.  Also I don't have an in-line mute switch anywhere along the wire.  i've restarted my PC twice aswell.

http://www.saitek.com/uk/prod/gh20.htm  <--- headset
Don't know the exact sound card but when selecting the device it is called "SB Live! Wave device"

If i plug the two jacks into the front of my PC the mic workd but i can't hear :S

Length of the wire means i can't plug the mic in the front and the headset in the back. damn.

Any ideas? I don't understand how it was working fine one day and not the next.

Try switching the plugs around, you might have mixed them up plugging them in.....

ive only got onboard sound sadly so im not sure much this relates.

i have a similar problem, kinda difficult to explain it completly coz its a bit weird.

mic worked fine for years then one day did'nt.  i thought it was prolly the shonky game mic id been using for so long, but it wasnt as it turned out.  the main problem i have is that it now feeds back (when i testing it with bf2voice setup and teamspeak it kinda echos like the mic is to near the speakers or summat,  makes a vicious whine noise which gets louder and louder)  but when using ventrilo or the ms voice recorder is fine.

my mate kept telling me to make sure it hadnt muted itself in volume controls and obv. it hadnt.  my speakers had always been a bit funky and since my mic was fubar i had a fiddle and turns out i can never get all 5 speakers working at the same time ( currently i can only get three to work at teh same time lol) ALSO i realised that whenever i touch summat with the black wire (the amp i think) it makes a horrible electronic basey whine noise which is a bit worrying tbh.

anyway i think i may have uninstalled the nvidea onboard sound drivers i had originally and one day without changing any options from when it wasnt working...it worked :S

although i still get the feed back whine when using setup for bf2vs and ts (amusingly i found this week that for some reason the mic was now muted in volume controls despite having been using it for months).  alas i have found another problem too.  when im looking at the OS screen if i touch the headset+mic i can hear the noise of the contact thru my speakers.  so if i speak into it with my mouth not far away for the mic i can hear my voice thru the speakers even when im not running any progs.  has my tower gone live or summat, really confusing i reckon.

anyway u might need to have a look at the audio codecs and drivers u have got atm coz i think my problem may have been a conflict originally.  also it could be that the mic jack at the back has broken.  maybe u could split the wires on ur mic+headset at a push and use the front and the back.

to sum up not much help really.  soz :S

Start -> Accessories -> Entertainment -> Volume Control -> Options -> Properties -> click recording -> make sure "stereo mixer" is ticked -> then mute it.

Sorted.
