Ok guys, I swore to myself I wasn't gonna buy SF. I hated the idea of EA imposing this new expansion on us. I don't mind people playing with the new kits, it just felt wrong for some reason the way this was done (flame me if you want, I don't care). But some of my favorite servers switched to SF maps, and my friends also decided to get SF so I figured I'd embrace the change and suck it up.

So, I half-heartedly log on to EA site, purchase the game online, download their downloading thingy and I'm on my way to becoming another SF customer. Now I still can't believe this, I can't get over it, I've had the stupid game downloading all fucking day, and finally I get to the 1 GB mark, and I can feel victory nearby. The counter says there are 10 mins left of download. I get up, grab some water, waste time, come back and it now says 3 mins left. So I'm getting ready for what I imagine would be a long install... and then BAM, the downloader does some weird looking stuff, timer isn't going down, I'm starting to freak out, and out of nowhere the window goes blank and at the top I just see something that says "Fatal Error" or something along the lines of that.

I'm thinking shit, gotta restart the program, surely the downloaded stuff hasn't been lost right. So I reopen the downloader, do the whole process again, start downloading SF and it literally starts back at 0Mb. I know sometimes the bar takes a while to get back up to where it was, kinda doing a check kinda thing, but no, this time all the downloaded data is gone. So I just stare at the screen blankly, open up my browser, go to BF2s and click on complain forums and here I am now.

I am like so incredibly furious right now, I just want my money back man, how could EA do this to me???

Strange, my download last week crashed as well, yet after relogging back in it picked up right where it left off.

Wah wah.  It's an internet thing, not an EA thing.  Sometimes my DLs get stuck, but I don't create threads about it.

How is it an internet thing? If it was an internet thing the download would stop, stall, pause, anything... it doesn't make a message appear on the download window saying "Fatal Error". I'm not stupid dude, so please don't come into my thread and push my buttons.

But, on a lighter note, I am more calm and rational now and decided to just laugh it off. I'm just glad you don't pay internet anymore by KB downloaded cause that was one heck of a lot of bandwidth gone to waste! Plus I won't be able to get the F2000 yet, still got 1000 pts to go so I'd have to wait anyway.

I'm gonna leave it all night downloading and see if it happens again, maybe I can figure out what made the crash happen so I can post it up and have it not happen to other people.

Much better attitude, the force will be on your side this time

It's definitely possible that it's EA's fault, but it's still an assumption.  The vast majority of the people who used the downloader had no issues at all (except for the CD-key issue on Day 1, that EA apologized for and promptly fixed).

The culprit is likely any number of things.  I'm not an expert on TCP/IP, but I imagine that if a computer somewhere along your route suddenly went down and your packets got scattered, and started arriving in the wrong order, and then a few were missing... and you see where I'm going.  It's easy for the transfer to be become corrupted that way.  I deal with it all day long at work in a local environment.

In the end it's just a guess though.  Hope it works for ya.

I guess you didnt see any of the many threads about not downloading it because of stuff like that. I do feel your pain, however. Get the C4 out.

No I was bad, I was semi-boycotting SF so I refused to check out posts related to it hehe. I think the fact that it actually said "fatal error" is what pissed me off. Even a graceful freeze with no message could've at least let me think that I screwed somethign up. Hell even a blue screen of death and I could've just blamed it on Microsoft. But no, EA took the fall wittingly there.

I have a real copy too (as soon as it downloads)... but it's easier to buy online when you don't have a car, and you're in college, and you have decent broadband, and you're just lazy.

Stupid old me - I bought SF in a shop...no problems what so ever and I have the game in hard copy. Buy the game "in a real shop" then your safe

EA should take something out of the Blizzard play book and create a bittorrent like downloader that shares the bandwidth with others. Either that or shell out some more dough for a faster downloadable game file. A download should never take longer than a few hours on a decent broadband connection. They didn't think this through which is about on par for anything EA does. That's their main fault really... not thinking it through.

When did you download it?  I did mine through the downloader on Wed 23rd USA prime time and had no issues.  I got the 1.2 GB in ~1.5 hours.  If you tried it on the day of release, I would expect bandwidth issues no matter how many servers they try to run.  A bittorrent is a decent idea though.

Why don't you just buy the fucking disc version. Much more reliable and you have a hard copy of it.

why didn't you go to a store to buy it?  For me personally I buy it from retailers instead of dl because I know something might go wrong and the dl will stop.

Ha ha haa! Welcome to the world of the crappy computer! So far, population me, but if your PC keeps fucking up like that GotMex? you're gonna be mayor.

I suggest you buy it. Downloading is dodgy, no matter where you do it from. Just a little hiccup can mean that you've wasted a couple of hours, or days even.

An update on my crappy computer:
Yesterday this fucking machne stopped reading CDs of any sort. It has now three things it can do:
- Download/Play music/Family Guy,(and simpsons, South park, that kinda thing,) episodes.
- Write on Microsoft word, (although this screws up often, and sometimes lags)
- Go on the Internet, (often fucks up and I have to restart the damn thing.)

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's it. If I have to guess, I reckon that playing music and videos is going to go next.

I love all these "Why didn't you just get a real disc" solutions as if I always predict that EA sucks at everything and they were gonna screw up my download... I posted that I can't just go out an buy it because the nearest store to where I live is like about 45 mins in bus (don't have a car) and downloading is more convinient.

I really don't get the guys that tell me this because there is a reason that EA offers a downloadable version of their game. The point is, avoid the hassle of going to the store, dealing with sold out copies, etc, just download it off our servers. What I'm trying to point out in my thread is that I trusted EA once again with my money, thinking that it would work out well, but for some reason their software screwed up and cause me to lose all that had been downloaded. Hence, I've been proved wrong once again, and don't really want to buy any more EA related things.

Besides, what happens when I go and buy the disc at a store but for some reason can't install it. I bet everyone would be saying "Why didn't you just download it, save the hassle".

Update: Woke up this morning and game was 100% downloaded so a little faith has been restored in EA (Not much). Installed the game and then I realized that I had to apply patch 1.12 once again to be able to play the game. I couldn't help but chuckle since I had already deleted the massive 300mb patch when I used it for regular BF2, now I was gonna have to download it again. They had it on their downloader as an option, but fuck that, I just went to another site and downloaded it 10 times faster. So I'm good to go.
