That might sound like a dumb question but as I've stated about a million times, "I know next to nothing about hardware".
I guess my current motherboard doesn't properly support my new processor, that's why I've been getting errors, so I guess i have to buy a new motherboard which means I will have replaced just about every single fuxing thing in the computer that I bought from Alienware for over $3,000

So anyway my question is how much do motherboards really effect performance? If it makes a big difference I'm looking at this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6813131593
If it's just a place to put video/sound cards & stuff then I'll get a cheaper one I guess, I'm just getting rather annoyed at my computer not working so if I have to replace it I want to replace it with the best one I can.....

Please don't ever buy an Alienware...

Do you plan on overclocking?

Yes. I know what to do now, I'm just not 100% sure "how" to do it & am gonna wait until I get everything sorted out first because I've had to reset my BIOS on this computer at least twice a day for about the last week

Go with a good one.

Nothing is more annoying then not having enough slots of ram, USB ports, SLI Video Card Slots, or something that isn't compatible with your Processor like you said.

And just so you know, that Board is for AMD. So it will not support Intel C2D, or Quad core CPU's.

Thank you for pointing that out, I know alot of people just assume things but i did know that. It's the best Socket AM2 board I could find on newegg & I just bought an AMD FX-62 about a week ago.

So, I won't give you my credentials, but I will tell you that I know about that which I speak...

The motherboard has a HUGE impact on performance...specifically, the chipset USED on the motherboard impacts performance GREATLY. Make sure that you purchase a chipet designed to work with your processor and then purchase the motherboard from a reputable mobo manufacturer. While it is true that most mobo manufacturers simply use the reference schematics from the chipset/processor manufacturer, the GOOD ones not only follow the schematics religiously, they also innovate on the schematics for increased performance.

Also, reputable mobo manufactures don't use 2nd-rate components, leading to poorer electrical signals and therefore performance.

Asus, A-bit, Gigabyte are ALL good manufacturers.

um.. would you like to review that statement "nuka"
motherboards do not give you "HUGE" increases in speed they give you approximately from each chipset vendor (nvidias highest chipset, vias highest, sis' highest) about 0-5% increase in speed

but with aftermarket mobos (although i think alienware lets you oc but you got a new cpu) you will be able to change mem speeds/timings htt settings multipliers in case of fx chips or other "extreme" chips.

the 590 chipset has highest performance and ocs like a beast especially with your unlocked FX62

btw what are you doing with old parts from alienware?

I'm savin them up until I either blow something in this puter or have enough (or almost enough) parts to build a 2nd system from scratch (my Dad could use a computer & although he has the money he'll never buy one himself)

I ordered the Asus Crosshair today, thanks alot for all your help everyone. If I didn't +1 you yet it's because I ran out of karma (or maybe i got reset for padding ) so I'll do so when I get refreshed.

Think of your computer as a highway, decide for yourself how many lanes you want by installing motherboard, cpu, ram and all the other stuff it takes to build one.

If you go for the 8 lane cpu you cant install a 4 lane motherboard or a 2 lane ram stick because the computer itself will never have the efficient flow of traffic if you keep changing the amount of lanes !

A very simplified conclusion but still, so search for components that do well together and most online hardware stores have that option to suite parts together !
Wait behind the line ..............................................................
