i'm looking for a software firewall for my laptop. while zone alarm is great it interferes with my vpn client which i need to connect to the internet at university. after countless hours its safe to say that the 2 just dont work together. you guys know any other good firewalls? somehow i'm not to confident in windows firewall.
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

I hazard to mention it due to the torrent of abuse I know I'm gonna get, but have you thought of Norton?

yeah, in fact norton internet security was pre installed on my pc. but i quickly uninstalled that because its a huge pain with all the pop ups telling me that i'm at risk. is it even possible to install just the firewall without all of the anti-virus/spyware/spam/... shit
EDIT: apparently there is a stand alone norton firewall

might go for that. any other input?

Norton isn't shit, in a roundup last year of all the internet security suites Norton came top for catching the most intrusion attempts and viruses. The problem with Norton is that it a) likes to make sure you know it's there with popups and shit, and b) it's a bit of a resource hog. In the roundup it slowed the system down by 13%, compared to 6% for McAfee.

Norton is by far the best at what it does, but you have to live with it's downsides if you want the best security.

To me Norton is the attention whore of firewalls. Like it's saying "Look at me! I just stopped a possible hax0r from stealin yer megahurtz! See what a great job I'm doing!" While others like Zone Alarm say "OK, I'll keep an eye on things, you do what you wanna do, I'll be over here if you need me." And it's pretty much impossible to get Norton to completely uninstall automatically. I had to go and fiddle with the registry and junk to clear out the last traces of it from my rig.

Try Tiny firewall, I used it a lot and easy to configure and also very free for home use.

Never ever uninstall Norton using the control panel > Add/Remove programs. If you ever want to remove Norton do a search for "norton removal tool" and you'll get exactly what it says on the tin.

Well said, I would personally go with a network firewall, with IPTABLES or use m0n0wall so that every machine on the network is secure simultaneously.

Here is a list of a few FREE firewalls, eff paying for stuff.

Ever asked your university if they have routers which have hardware firewalls already in them ? you might not need a firewall at all.

Been using it for years free, its free version is great (cuz I dont want the web stuff).

You can turn off the smart stuff, web, HIPS, NIPS if they cause you any lag in game, or clash with other applications. You can also have in easy suto mode, or as I run it so it asks you when new apps try to access the net, launch other apps, or get replaced.

Yet another reason Norton sucks. It take an extra tool to get it to uninstall.

It's funny, but everyone knocks Norton and yet everyday I turn on my PC and have virus free/intrusion free/spam free/adware free computing. My mate who uses Zone Alarm frequently sends me messages along the lines of "Shit I've got a virus, I'll be on later", or "Shit I've got so many viruses I'm going to have to reinstall windows".

Norton may be an attentionwhore, resource hog, and be a pain in the ass to uninstall, but it works.

What would his virii's have to do with his firewall, if he's initiating the download requests and getting this virii's because he's not being smart about what he downloads it doesn't matter if his firewall is God. That's why you have a firewall and a virus scan, the firewall will only block the Virus from broadcasting/allowing access to the machine.

thanks for all your imput guys. i'll take a look into the recommendations.

in fact we have hardware firewalls at uni. but i connect my notebook to all sorts of networks when i'm not at home or at uni (i dont want to die of internet withdrawal afterall). at the same time i also need the vpn client outside of uni to access all of the restricted databases and similar.

i'm 1/2 through the download of norton firewall right now (why is the torrent so bloody slow). but unless it behaves a lot different from internet security i'm gonna ditch it again. i really dont feel like spending 5 minutes every boot getting rid of norton's pop-ups telling me how great my protection is.

karma for everyone
EDIT: damm i'm out, more coming tomorrow

I gotta agree with the doc. Norton is great for stopping hackorrrrrrrs and virus's. It never bugs me either because i ticked off auto messages everything something happens.
