G.Skill 2GB RAM (two sticks of 1GB)

If you need more specifics I can get that for you. I've got my eyes on this Thermaltake 500W but I fear that for some reason, it isn't enough =/

Yeah I've always had a good experience with Tt supplies. Love them. Just need to know if 500W is plenty... I'd like some more opinions. Not that I don't value yours scott, I just want some more thoughts on this

erm my system uses more than 500W lol, ok its got 14 fans in it but its old as shit, id be lookin at 600+ tbh, go with enermax as well, much better PSUs.

Thermaltakes can be randomly unreliable. I've had to RMA 3 of them so far, but never with Enermax. But if you get a good one, it's a good one.

Get a thermaltake toughpower 650watt, it's perfect. I have one. It's got 4 12v rails, 18 amps on each.

It all depends what sort of 8800 it is. If it's a GTS then 500W is fine. If it's a GTX you're gonna need a bigger PSU (about 600W).

I can't believe no one has asked this yet!

I agree that Enermax are better than Thermaltake too, although Seasonic are better than either.

Yes it's a GTS. And wow, all these suggestions are uber expensive =S What about this one:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6817153042

I know some folks don't reccomend it and some do, but I'm trying to make this thing as cheap as possible while being current-gen.

I just built a system very similar to this, which was basically:

E6600 Core 2 Duo w/ standard cooler
XFX 8800 GTS
Asus P5B Deluxe mobo with o/board sound and wi-fi
Seagate 250GB SATA
G Skill 2GB of RAM (one stick was faulty and had to be replaced under warranty)
A Coolermaster case with about 3 stock fans
2 x LG DVD-R/RW

This was entirely and reliably powered by a Antec NeoHE 500W, (after I'd immediately removed and binned the Hairong that came with the case) which I loved because of the modular cabling, which made for a far cleaner case.

Forgot the link, here's the product:

I've got one of them powering a 7950GX2, a X2 4200, 5 HDD's, a 6 fans and a few LED's.

It's available in a few different colours (if you're getting a case with a clear panel for instance) and comes in a great little toolbox which now stores all my spare wires and parts.

Yeah that'll do nicly, 500w would probably cope just about, but you need to be thinking of future upgrades too.

500w is fine. The GTX doesn't require as much power as everyone thinks.

Though, I would highly recommend the HIPER 580W Modular. Probably the best 500watt range power supply.

Though, as long as amps are sufficient, 500w is fine for even two 8800GTX's.

I looked up a Hiper one, seems good:

It'll work right? Saw complaints about a 4 pin instead of 8 pin 12v connector... that won't pose a problem will it??

No its not. Did you forget that psu only goto 500w as its last resort and most of the time the psu will hover 50w more or less lower than what it is rated at. With that setup he would need almost the exact amount or a little more wattage to give it the power it needs. You would need a 700watt psu so you can be out of the deep end and have head room for extra cooling or accessories.

The brand "be quiet" doesn't exist in US, no?

But well, a 500W high-quality piece will easily handle your system.
Also, if you're going for a new one, quality-wise your choice would have to be Enermax.

According to Outervision's PSU Calculator > http://extreme.outervision.com/PSUEngine

You need at least 512W. Although that PSU probably has a peak of around 550.

I'd recommend a 580-600W minimum.

500W will be absolutely fine. I run a similar system :

E6300@3GHz (use more power than an E6600 at stock and due to high OCs inadequate power would cause instability, that I have yet to experience)
8800GTS@660/1010 (yet more power above stock)
500GB WD striped RAID HDDs.
3 additional HDDs.
2 optical drives.
Audigy 2.
Additional fans.

My 520W PSU handles all this with ease. You certainly don't need a 600W PSU or anything like that.

A 500W PSU will be ample. You could probably get by on a 400W, though I wouldn't recommend getting less than a 450W supply. The manufacturer is very important when it comes to PSUs though, with more than 90% of PSUs failling to produce the amount of power they are specified to produce.

I'd recommend something like this:

How do you figure that?

Especially since that site does not list the 8800GTS as an option, only the GTX.

Even stranger... I have that site bookmarked and input the same specs.  The number came up to 382W despite that I was using a 8800GTX as a video card.

Additions I made when calculating: 2x 80mm fans, 1x 120mm fan.  I do not know if he's going for SATA or PATA but to be safe, I went with PATA 7200RPM HDD x1.  And the rest I've already accounted for.

I'm actually surprised the estimated power requirement is just that much.  So in theory, 500W should definitely suffice if there's enough amperage to power the 8800 card.  My rig currently runs on 600W from Seasonic and so far, it's been rock solid.  Then again, I run an Athlon64 X2 3800+ o/c'd to 2.4GHz.  So it's not exactly an apple to apple comparison.

I'm going with a 550W supply for my new system in case I want to upgrade later, but if you want to keep it cheap I guess you go with the cheapest. Keep in mind though that a slightly larger PSU it's that much more, and it may mean you don't have to buy a new one down the track.

thermaltake supplies are really good. hence they list the rated power....... the peak on that 500w would prob be around 650w... other supply makers frequently list the peak power... so stick with thermaltake......
it will be good enough.   so  brand x has a 600w psu for $100 thermal take have a 500w psu for $100.... thermaltake Will generally be better.

Be sure to plug a floppy pin connector into your X-Fi, it really helps.
