No its not. Did you forget that psu only goto 500w as its last resort and most of the time the psu will hover 50w more or less lower than what it is rated at. With that setup he would need almost the exact amount or a little more wattage to give it the power it needs. You would need a 700watt psu so you can be out of the deep end and have head room for extra cooling or accessories.CrazeD wrote:
500w is fine. The GTX doesn't require as much power as everyone thinks.
Though, I would highly recommend the HIPER 580W Modular. Probably the best 500watt range power supply.
Though, as long as amps are sufficient, 500w is fine for even two 8800GTX's.
Dailytech did an article on the power consumption of the 8800GTX's. They had a QX6700, 2GB DDR2 800 RAM, a 150GB Raptor HDD, and an 8800GTX. They used a Thermaltake Tough power 700w with an efficiency of 85%. They then took a Kill-a-Watt meter to measure how much power they drew from the power outlet.
In 3D mode, they drew around 330 watts, which is around 280w after the efficiency is calculated. The CPU alone takes around 100w, so therefore the video card, hard drive, any fans, and the RAM all ran off 170w. 500 - 330 = 170. Even if you take 50 out of that, that's still 120. Plenty.
The Thermaltake Toughpower 700w is an excellent power supply though, even if you will never use that much power.
