The Playstation 3 will be launched in Europe on 23rd March, it has been announced.  Initially only the full-on 60gb version will be released, the 20gb may come later in the year.

Price will be 599 Euros or 425 pounds sterling.  (USD equivalents are 772.77 and 832.95 respectively).

For comparison, the same unit costs 774 USD on amazon.com.  So it appears UK buyers will be paying a 60 USD premium.

Holy fucking shit.

The Xbox 360 costs 399 Euros here. Are we actually expected to pay fucking 599 Euros for a PS3?
This is ridiculous. What's with the strangely high prics is Europe anyway?

Case in point: PSP games.
A psp game costs, what, 40 dollars in America?
Well, they cost 50 euros here (about 60 dollars?). It's actually cheaper for me to have a game shipped all the way over here from America than to buy it in a local store. Something's seriously messed up here.

I guess it sucks to be on the wrong side of the pond.  or the wrong pond for that matter.

Starbucks over here, a double espresso costs around £2.29 - in America, it costs $2.29. Go figure. We're used to it!

As for the PS3, it is cheaper than I expected to be honest. Blu-Ray drives cost £500, and you can get an entire PS3 console for £420 or so.

The PS3 is going to be $999 in Aus. That comes to ~771 USD.

Seems australians aren't paying that same premium......

Know what? Today 599€ is exactly $774. Finally we didn't get cheated on this one (poor Brits, though).

perhaps the re-engineering of the electronics for 220 power accounts for the cost? Not sure if this is true or not but its the only thng i culd think of.
