AMD 64 3000, 2 GHZ
1GB OCZ Platinum RAM
ATI x1950pro

no matter what settings I use in BF2, I get mediocre fps. 40-60 in busy areas, 60-80 in empty area's, 80-100 offline (by myself)

no matter what settings I use, I get those frame rates. 1280x1024, all high, 4x aa and 16xAF I still get them, but also for 800x600, everything off/low.

same goes for just about any game (bar oblivion) I actually notice an increase in FPS the higher settings I use, but never always above 60.

any way I can ease the pain?

IIRC, when you're getting responses like that it's you CPU that is the bottleneck. I'd say either OC your CPU if you can, or if your mobo will accept it get a higher end AMD CPU.

Probably not enough RAM, 2 gig much better.

How is your RAM configured ??  1 x 1 gb ,  2 x 512gb.....

All of the above, I think the 3800+ is still the best on the bang/buck=win equation (check though) if you're on a budget, if not go for the best you can use. 2GB RAM will deffinatly help, make sure its dual channel and dont mix it, just buy a matched pair and ebay off your old stuff (I'm 99.9% sure your mobo will take dual channel RAM, check anyway though).

2GB of RAM make a difference, the difference between 1Gb and 2 is like day and night (unless you have two SCSI harddrives with 15k rpm and 3ns in RAID 0, then the difference might not be that great...)

'nuff of the buy more hardware responses, I've already bought a new PSU (110 euro's) case (70) graphics card (220) headset (65) and a creative audigy 4 (60), all out of money for the moment.

my current RAM setup is 1x1gb DDR
socket 754

the video card was just to buy me a few more FPS for the moment, and I was planning on doing a proper upgrade in the summer. I'm not buying another stick of 1gb because it's going to be incompatible with C2D and other future processors. If there's a 3800 available for a 754 socket, I'm all ears.

Otherwise, I'm just looking for tweaks/tricks/whatever to help

Nope it's new hardware or nothing.

Are you techie minded Sarge......??   what are you current memory timings....it might help if you slacken them off a little..

have you ocer clocked it??? set your board settings all to Auto to see if that makes a difference...  drop your memory down a notch...400 to 333 ...see if that helps

Update the BIOS on you MB

You should not need to buy anything except another gig of ram sometime maybe....

FYI

I'm running a 3000 754 with 1gig of 400ddr on a ATX 800XL ...I get between 70 - 80 fps 1024 X 768 high

I'd say your ram is the bottleneck, an P4 1.7 ghz CPU is enough for bf2, you have an AMD which is totally different.
Maybe overclock you CPU a little bit, and buy that another gig of ram!

Hm, so you're not going to upgrade your memory...
Well, I've got a problem with the fact that a friend of mine had been playing this game with a P4 2,53GHz a 9600Pro and 512MB of RAM aswell, so it might really be a problem that's not too much about hardware...

Did you already try to clear you whole cache folder (My Documents\Battlefield 2\mods\bf2\cache), defrag your hdd and then let the shaders be optimized again?
Also, try to set all the dynamic options to 'off'? They are rather unnecessary anyway...

2-3-2-5, 400 at the moment. Not over clocked

also, My CPU absolutely refuses to be overclocked more than 140 mhz. It's not temperature as it goes between 33-45 (idle/load). at 140 I get errors in stress tests, more than that blue screens and at about 200 it just dies. Just half a year ago I was able to pull 250 mhz overclock before it started getting errors.
although I do have to overclock it from within windows, my motherboard is a piece of junk tbh (MSI ms-7142, or K8MM-V) Any reason why?

recently formatted for the first time in a year, used perfectdisk 8 to defrag, then tweaked and optimized my PC to the point of obsession.
Again, no matter what settings in BF2 = same FPS

BIOS is the most recent version (still quite old though)

I know you don't want to hear this but it's your RAM.  I had the same problems when running 1 gig of RAM.  I'm running a similar setup with a lesser video card. - GeForce 6600 gts.  I spent the money on the RAM first then video card and I run on high at 1024x768 with AA off.  2gigs of RAM makes all the difference - it'll run smoother and load faster just by adding RAM.  It's only another $70 bucks from Newegg.

Like you I tweaked and tweaked to no avail until I added the RAM.  The game is memory intensive and I can't wait for the ability to run 4gigs in Vista.

Okey, another try: Is there any possibility that your Gfx card doesn't recognize BF2 as a 3D full-speed program and therefore stays in some downclocked mode?
