Hi again

I was just wondering if someone can answer one of the age-old questions out there for me:

why do downloads ALWAYS gradually go slower and slower and slower?!

it pisses me off so much, every time I get a good download speed, it's halved itself within a minute.

Just now, re-downloading patch 1.41 from the multiplay UK ftp. My maximum download speed is 1.3 MB/s, it started off at about 1 MB/sec and now it's managed to go down to 511 KB/sec

Why the hell doesn't it just download at one speed?!

Fair dinkum ... The server you are downloading from has a finite amount of bandwidth. That bandwidth is shared amongst yourself and all the other people downloading their porn. There is only so much porn a server can serve up at one time.

Hence the more people downloading the less of a share of total bandwidth you receive.

That still doesn't explain why loading speed goes down always. It NEVER goes up, always down...

well, my big downloads actaully start of slow, pick up speed, then slow right back down to about 150kbps (when it should be about 1.5MB)

While you are navigating the windows where you decide what folder to download your file you clicked on to, xp is already busily downloading the file to the temp folder, as soon as you click the final ok whatever is already downloaded gets punched into the progress bar and appears at a phenomenal speed. This gets averaged over the rest of the connection and all we see is the numbers slowly going down as it tends towards the norm, the actual transfer rate.

The faster your connection the more it can grab in those few seconds of choosing, infact you may even notice small files have actually finished in the time it takes to navigate to your save/store folders. If you want to see it accentuated, next time you download a file, just wait 30 seconds or so before you click the final box telling it where to save then see the big bolt of speed as it transfers it out of cache.

or of course if any one server on the link is under an increasing load over time then this will add to the effect.

Actually IP was invented by the American DoD (Department of Defense) a LONG time ago.

If you really want to know why your file transfers *appear* to start at 1000Kb/s+ and then scale back, do some reading on the TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) Sliding Windowing principle.

Many Possibilities:

Internet Settings and Why: SpeedGuide (Insufficient RWIN size?).
Every ISP I know of throttles bandwidth. It doesn't matter if it's cable or dsl you're speed is not the full possible speed of the pipe.
It can also be a programming anomoly in the data rate calculation code of the web browser or internet application.
It's also very likely the server you are getting content from has connection rules that limit/throttle bandwidth.

This last one is very common... in fact any server that doesn't is open to easy DDOS attacks.
