First, let me admit up-front that I suck big time, so no one needs to look up my stats and point that out.

People are just too hard to kill with small arms! If I understand the numbers right, three to six hits are required to kill someone at full health for most weapons (does body armor make that even higher?). One of the most popular server mods to Soldier of Fortune was called "real damage", which dramatically increased the lethality of small arms in that game; it usually took just one or two hits to the torso to kill. That dramatically improved the game IMHO.

Another thing I would like to see changed in BF2 is there there should be some reaction when you get hit. Perhaps just a fraction of a second of freeze if you are not moving, or momentary slow down if you are running. The current situation, where no amount of damage short of death has an effect, is quite surreal. I don't advocate making a person go half speed all the time if they are at 50% health because that would make the game too real (and make medics too popular).

Please think about what I have suggested on it's own merits, and not just about what a clueless noob I am, because I really think this needs fixing.

BTW, I loose way more than half the gun battles I get into even at short range when I shoot first. I fire two bursts from 10 feet at someone's back, and the guy still turns around and kills me. Any suggestions about to improve that deplorable situation are welcome (but perhaps a little off topic).

Aim for the head and upper chest area for your first burst.  Right-click to look down your sights to make the shot more accurate. Make yourself a smaller target by at least crouching, going prone makes it easier for them to shoot you in the head however. If they are at medium to long range switch your gun to semi-auto and pump a shot at a time in quick succession.

Thanks for the suggestions, see below.

Do you think it takes too many hits to kill with small arms?

Okay, I should go for head shots more often, particularly if I've got the drop on them. Got it.
I already drop to prone most of the time, perhaps kneeling would be better at short range.
I do right click to sight, I almost never "shoot from the hip". Perhaps the right click to sight takes too long at close range?
I do comparatively better at longer ranges, it's the close range encounters I find the most frustrating.

Small arms won't win you any straight up fights. I'm pretty sure the intent is to be that way.

Small arms are for clutch situations when your clip is empty, or for classes that have an unwieldy or situationally bad primary weapon (sniper, shotguns at range, etc.) that they need a sidearm for support

The idea is not bad but should be only a mod as most of the time my first shots miss, then I get hit one or two times before I kill my opponents. ^^
