I'll upgrade my RAM, if it really helps as much as you lot say it will.

Here's my rig again:

AMD 64 3000, clocked at 2.2 GHZ
ATI X1950pro AGP
1GB OCZ Platinum RAM (2-3-2-5, DDR, 400, 1x1GB)
MSI K8MM-V motherboard (S754, AGP)
ThermalTake Soprano + ThermalTake Toughpower 600 watts

I cannot get ahold of another identical 1x1GB stick. There are 2 RAM slots on my motherboard. Can I run other DDR400 sticks in dual channel mode as long as they have the same specs, or do they have to be absolutely identical?

And will it really make that much of a difference? FPS wise?

thanks,

1) I think you can run two DDR400 sticks, but the faster one will probably be underclocked

2) You don't get as much stutter at the start of a round on high graphics. It's mainly for reducing 'overhead' at the start, and somewhat quicker loading. It's nice.

Upgrading mine from 1GB to 2GB made a big difference, upgrading from 2GB to 4GB....meh, I can tell in Photoshop but that's about it. AND I don't have exactly identical sticks. Alienware lied to me about the RAM they put in my computer so I got 2 more of those, they are the same timings & everything though, just one pair has EPP & one doesn't. Still works just fine though
I think you can run in dual channel as long as the timings & stuff are the same, I could easily be wrong but I don't think it matters (at least not as much) with DDR. I had 2 completely different 1GB sticks in my old computer & it worked fine.

FPS wise.....I think you should see a difference but it would be like you bought a new computer, like Hurricane said it's more for loading & behind-the-scenes kinda stuff. Certaintly won't hurt your FPS though, probably give you a little bump up.

dual channel means to of the same memory

so i.e if it was corsair

it would be 2 x XMX 1Gb for 2 Gb of memory

it wont matter about what other memory you put in there it wont affect anything

just make shure its the same speed and you shud be good.

yeah no worries they dont have to match exactly

technicly if you buy an ultracheap budget stick the PID might be lower causing your current stick to run *slightly* under its max, no big deal, you would never ever notice but i mention it to placate the performance ram geeks, simply any ddr400 with 2-3-2-5 (or better) timings would be a great match and if not, any other ddr 400 will do with a miniscule loss of a percent or two in the worst case if you buy the ultracheapshit made in a chinese backyard factory ram.

Fortunately 2-3-2-5 400 is easy to find, i have 2-3-2-5 gskill zx in this pc and theres several other brands.

I was so lucky to get some stick from the same manufacturer with the same specs. Still, it looks different (although it's the same series). Nevertheless, they work great.

And as people already stated: 2Gb of RAM mean hell-a-lot of fun, since you won't suffer from that laggin' Oilfields problem and similarities anymore. A map, once loaded, shall never "lag" again :-)
