If it fit in the slot on your mobo, it's compatible.  If it's not recognizing it, it could be faulty.

i dont think u can mix 1gigs with 512 they all have to be the same. Also check and make sure that u inserted you card into the right slot since the ram slots are composed and ordered in this manner A1, A2, B1, B2.So you have to insert the ram into the right place it goes a1 then b1.

yeah thats kind of what i thought, man this is going to take some time because the 512 is firm up against the video card, so it is going to be a pain to take out
-edit, thanks both of you guys

A couple of things:

I'm not familiar with the mobo in that computer, but I know with some older PCs they could not utilize double density RAM (would only show 1/2 the value) - however, that was back with PC RAM and I doubt that is your problem.

Now, with some more recent mobos they may only use single sided RAM in the 3rd/4th slots. That is RAM where all the chips are on one side of the module and not both. If you have that type of mobo and the RAM is double sided, that could explain the issue.

EDIT:

No, you can absolutely mix and match RAM of different sizes. However, some mobos can be picky in some situations. However, if you do use modules of different sizes and the PAIRS are not the same then you cannot run in dual channel. But you could use 2 x 512 AND 2 x 1024 and run oin dual channel as long as you pair them correctly - usually the slots will be color coded. Like pairs go in like colors.
