A couple of things:
I'm not familiar with the mobo in that computer, but I know with some older PCs they could not utilize double density RAM (would only show 1/2 the value) - however, that was back with PC RAM and I doubt that is your problem.
Now, with some more recent mobos they may only use single sided RAM in the 3rd/4th slots. That is RAM where all the chips are on one side of the module and not both. If you have that type of mobo and the RAM is double sided, that could explain the issue.

No, you can absolutely mix and match RAM of different sizes. However, some mobos can be picky in some situations. However, if you do use modules of different sizes and the PAIRS are not the same then you cannot run in dual channel. But you could use 2 x 512 AND 2 x 1024 and run oin dual channel as long as you pair them correctly - usually the slots will be color coded. Like pairs go in like colors.
