Hey guys! i have found a cool performance boost! i don't know how well this works with newer cards but i have an old ATI 9800 128mb graphics card. I recently patched it to the newest drivers patch 8.31.0.0  and i found that my card has a default refresh rate of 85hrz. (you can find what your refresh is by going to Display properties > tab Settings > button Advanced > tab Monitor) i then opened BF2 and selected the video resolution mode that had 1024x 768  @ 85hz. (the same as your desktop refresh rate)

I was then surprised to see that my FPS had jumped to 50-70 FPS with the settings at :

Textures, Terrain, Geometry, and Effects on Medium,
Lighting on Low
2x AA on
Dynamic Shadows and Dynamic Light off
View distance at 95%

looking pretty good and pretty impressive for a 5 year old system that was only getting barely 30 FPS before i made these tweaks

Hope this helps you guys with old systems

What will he discover next? Time travel maybe.. or even, hell i don't know, a genetically modified hamster that can lift 12 times it's own body weight. Now that would be impressive! Sorry i will just step off the sarcasm train for a moment and say congrats, good find matey!

Are you going for pretty over performance?

na if i wanted pretty i would turn the shadows and lighting up more 50-70 FPS is great though... 40-30 is borderline laggy... 30 or less is Lagolitious. so i am really happy.

lol...everyone who said "d00d ur dumb old newz" isn't very smart themselves. I'm pretty darn sure changing your refresh rate didn't change your performance, if anything it may have lowered it, but it was installing the new drivers in the first place!

Roger, what I was getting at is that you can change some of the settings and maybe not get any drop in frame rate. I suggest always having dynamic light on, at least on low (it greatly helps to spot enemies firing, even behind walls).

Ideally view distance should be set at 100% (helps not to get shot by guys you can't see yet ) which you might be able to do if you drop textures to low and turn AA off.

Sorry if this is dumb... but how do you find out what FPS you're at? Is there an option to have it displayed or do you need software to measure it?

Either use fraps
or hit
'' `''(the key next to the 1) ingame and type renderer.drawfps 1

Whoa quick response, thanks. I figured it was something to do with that, same thing as changing how often PB updates etc

My video settings are at 1280 X 1024 @ 60 HZ.

Can someone explain the importance of a refresh rate @ 60 HZ please.

Basically if you run at 60hz your eyes will get strained, your head will hurt and your game won't look as smooth. 75hz is the minimum you ever want to play at really, 85-100 is good.

I run at 100hz on a CRT.

LCD's will be at 75hz usually.
