Seems to be a lot of outcry over the £18 price. If you skip the disk, its only £6.
Even if it is cheeper as online download, I don't want the EA Link malware on my PC.

As a matter of interest, where are you getting the £18 price tag from? I've yet to see it advertised anywhere for sale in the real world.
Okay, lets take a look at when I would actual use EA Link, once when I download the game/patch and then once every three or so months to download the next patch. In the mean time it wasts space on my PC running or not. When I do use it downloads all the ads and is a pain to look at (same as there 2142 stats site). I might be savvy enough to turn off the auto start but most people are not. It amazes me how many people have 30 system tray tasks/icons and the wonder why there PC is so slow.loonitic wrote:

And then there is the problems with re-installs. If I re-install (windows) frequently like many of my friends do then I would quickly be denied the re-download (yes I know you can back it up, but thats against EA's rules).

To Exit EA Link you can End the Process from the task list too (closing the program is not the problem I have with it).
EA was nice enough to send me an email to tell me about the NS pre-order, not to mention they will be advertising in both BF2142 and BF2. I don't need a fourth source for the ads.
Note: If I was not that interested in 2142 I would avoid it because of the ads. If they actual made it cheaper because it had ads then I would be more inclined to accept them.
I am not against ads. I just don't want bloat on my PC and I don't need to see ads every second of the day.

i am buying it as well and ea link is not mal-ware it has proven to be a pain sometimes but for the most part a trouble free app and for those of you who do not want marketing on your pc better sell them and never use them again (the Personal Computer is the embodiment of personal marketing) and it does not matter what OS you choose as all OS's have their slant and propaganda from Microsoft windows to open BSD

If EA Link is causing your computer to be sluggish, chances are you're running 512MB of RAM. With Steam, XFire, Avira AV, EA Link, and some other background processes I can run BF2 and 2142 (not at the same time of course) on pretty nice graphics without much lag. Any lag I get is from a poor video card and processor.
EA Link doesn't put spyware. Nor adware (well maybe). Nor viruses. It doesn't give the CIA, FBI, and Scotland Yard a method of finding out all your info, such as where you live and where you go to work/school and how much money you make and what you fear. Take the tin-foil hats off, EA isn't out to 'get' you.

While not near as bad as most ad-ware, I do find EA Link intrusive and annoying (more annoying than anything else). The fact that I have to download and install a program just to download and install a program that I actually want is a silly extra step that I don't want to have to do. Registering your game copy on-line should be enough.

I will be cautious with my money when it comes to games and I am not going to let them advertise to me using my hardware with out getting something in return (with 2142 at least I get to play on-line and they track my stats).

First of all its not secure over the net to register a copy, somebody could copy your bank card code and whips your lost all your money. With EA link they would need to hack your computer first and so on. Then you only install this program once, unless you need to format the pc every month for some reason.
You can also turn off the autostart and auto login so it want start. If you just want to shut it down just right click on it and click exit, or go in to windows task manager.
You can always pay for those other games but boosterpacks and so are not really worth buying on box if you can buy it over net. If you hate ads so much just download either firefox or opera and you can block whatever ads you see without problem. But sometimes they come back and its just to block them again.

I don't see EA Link being any more secure than logging in to a secure website to buy the game add-on. The EA account that your game is already tied to could have a saved field for weather you purchased the booster pack. You then download and install the booster-pack/patch that is available to everyone. When you login it connects to the EA master account server and verifies that you should have access to the booster-pack and so your added game features are unlocked.Zukabazuka wrote:

They don't need to hack your computer to get info from EA Link. The info still travails over the Internet and is stored by EA. Packet sniffers and/or man-in-the-middle attacks would work the same as long as they can break the encryption. But for both the most common way for someone to steal your info would be with a key logging/data capturing virus or to take the info from EA's database (where they would have thousands of records for other people).
I think we already went over the other points you mentioned.
