so I recently had my Seagate 160 GB hard drive fail on me. Not the greatest experience ever but I'm upgrading to vista so it's not all bad I guess. Now I'm looking for a new hard drive and I'm trying to find the "best brand" -- if one exists. In your experiences with hard drives, what brand has treated you the best? Links to newegg would be much appreciated
I've always used Western Digital drives in my builds, and have never had one go bad.
Uhm, that the Seagate didn't work well for you surprises me a little, since I'd list Seagate as a reliable hdd brand...
Well, Western Digital, Samsung (Maxtor is just the same as Seagate) are generally more reliable than Hitachi, for example. Of course there are also people who are very comfortable with their Hitachi drives, but if it was up to me, I'd go for Samsung.

I've been using Maxtor hard drives and I wouldn't recommend them. I've had 2 fail on me in the last year.
Western Digital
Sober enough to know what I'm doing, drunk enough to really enjoy doing it

All hard drives will fail. There is no magic formula for determining when a drive will fail. Some drives will fail after 1 day. Others will fail after decades of use. This is true for all drives from all manufacturers. That is why hard drive manufacturers use MTB (mean time before failure) for drive reliability measurement.
There are notable exceptions such as the "Death"star drives that had a high failure rate. But, by and large the MTB for most drives is pretty consistent. Most posts where people bad mouth a drive is because they had one or two fail and they switch brands and have not ahd a problem since. So what? Statistically speaking it menas nothing. I'd advise getting a drive with a good warrantly and always back up your data.

Never had any kind of luck with a Maxtor.
I'd have to say Seagate. They still have the best warranties, and every Seagate I've ever worked with has been a great drive.
While I still think WD makes a good drive, they've cut their warranty back to like 1 year, and overall, I've more WD drives fail at work than Seagate drives.

heh, on my main computer my C drive failed-lost a lot of stuff. THEN a week later my alternate computer's C drive failed FAN-FUCKING-TASTIC
I like my Hitachi Deskstar, but then a friend had two Deskstars both fail within 6months, so go figure...
I've had good experiences with Seagate, Hitachi, and Western Digital.
deathstars* They're horrible for anything other than light use.Scorpion0x17 wrote:

Samsung, fujitsu, seagate. Don't buy maxtor ever, and wd only when they're cheap.
Seagate works awesome for me. Their warranty = win.

Hmm... I'd say I put my deskstar under probably mid-heavy use and it's been running fine for over a year (don't recall exactly how long) - they're not top performers, in terms of speed, but from a sample size of my 1 drive, mine appears reliable.HeimdalX wrote:

I would definitely stay away from Maxtor, had too many go bad way too quickly. I have started using WD, and have not had a single problem with them.
I had problems with WD drives some time ago. But it was some time ago - like 5+ years - so they may well have improved.
Im not sure of the brand that was in my old comp but i know it would of been shit lol. I orderd a 160mb seagate today was looking at wd but was a little more expensive.
no best brand... but as a computer tech.. most failed brand i see IS seagate.. so stay away from it...

I bought a Maxtor drive about 3 years ago. It failed while under warranty so I sent it back and got a new one. But I had to wait for a while until it would be replaced so I bought another one to tide me over until the replacement came. Since then both have failed. ie that's 3 Maxtor drives I've owned, and all three failed while still under warranty. I didn't bother getting them replaced. I went out and got a Seagate. I've used Seagate drives on and off for 12 years and had one fail once (but it was getting old). I vote Seagate for reliability. Never tried Western Digital though.Drykill wrote:

i have a hitachi 160gb, but all my goods are stored on a 250 WD. the only problem i've ever had with the hitachi is when my partition corrupted itself two or three weeks ago. (prompting the purchase of the WD)Stormscythe wrote:
