Okay, first of all, ill post my specs, then the problem.

Specs:

Conroe E6300 overclocked to 2.1ghz
2gb ddr2 ram, operating at 704mhz
7800GS 256mb, overclocked to 470core/1325mem

Problem.

In bf2 ONLY, i get some stupid lag, its really making the game unplayable.

I have all the settings at max, and even if i lower them i still get the same problem. But this problem is weird, as it doesnt always happen.  If i look at one place, the fps can drop to 14, but if i look an inch to the right/left, its back to 90fps..this can be hell when sniping

I also get a lot of stutter.

Im gonna put it down to my hdd, as i think its on its death bed giving this lag.. but i want your opinion first, is this a known / fixable issue?

Any good help = Karma

Definitely not your computer, nice specs you got there.  I'd go with the HD too.

In BF2  there is a setting in the options for LAN or T1 make sure its not set to that it should be on the other setting 256 or better. The LAN  or T1 setting is just that for LAN play. Worked for me

I get this lag offline too, should have mentioned that, sorry.

I know what youre getting at, but incorrect net settings wouldnt cause me to get lag just when i look at a particular part of the map, would it? I would have thought if it was net lag, then it would be lagging all the time, and would it cause the slowdown im getting to lows of 14fps?

Graphic / driver.

Do a clean uninstall of your video drivers and reinstall em.

Just for shits and giggles, turn you graphics all the way down.

Also, in your gforce tab settings, shut you AA/T&L off.

Doesn't sound like an internet issue, if your looking in one spot and FPS are fine, then your turn and they drop, your comp cannot handle everything that is being drawn.

Gotta figure our why.

Yup, finished all of that, now i only have the problem with textures on high. Surely i shouldnt be having that problem on 2gb of ram?!

You've got 2GB of RAM - your hdd will not be used for any operations BF2 has to cache...

Must be an issue concerning your drivers or some malfunction with your BF2. If nothing else helps (even clearing and re-installing all graphic drivers) try to re-install your Battlefield 2, or at least delete all cache folders in C:\Documents and Settings\My Documents\Battlefield 2\mods\bf2\cache  (possibly also in the \mods\xpack\cache folder). After patching your gfx drivers, defrag the HDD and let BF2 load a map to optimize shaders.

Also, I have to say, with everthing on high it might just be a little too much for your 7800GS. If you like to have textures on high, try to lower dynamic light/shadows (or switch them completely off). This saves a lot of work for your gfx card.

I have a similar problem with BFG 7800GS OC...sometimes my game runs perfectly smooth (60+fps) and stable for extended periods of time with pretty much all settings on high, and other times when I load up BF2 the game chugs, regardless of my settings: it will run 10-20 fps on settings that my old 6800 breezes through.  My system is clean of spyware, I've flashed my BIOS and downloaded all new drivers, etc., and I can't get it to run good all the time.

BFG tech support asked me various questions about troubleshooting I'd done, and pretty soon they narrowed it down to almost surely being a faulty card, so I'm sending it in to be replaced.

When I read reviews before buying the card, a reviewer had speculated that they made the 7800GS's out of 7800 GPUs that didn't quite meet the requirements for the faster 7800's on the market.  I thought this sounded retarded at the time, but now...

The thing is i run oblivion on really high settings (all max except shadows off, i even have a texture pack added to make the textures even bigger...and i get really good fps..)

Im gonna try a full reinstall of bf2

@ Carnifex, I think my card is borked a bit also, as it fails to run properly in the cold :S It has to be above a certain temperature to run correctly.  Problem is, i cant remember the account i used to buy the card with, so im not sure i can rma it.

One thing to check is that your sound drivers are up to date.  I've had problems in the past where a bad sound card driver caused lag like a bitch.

Yea...I get weird lag too, not the same but everyone tells me i should be getting shitload higher FPS with my system. I have 2x 7900 Gs's in SLI, 2gb ram, AMD 4600 dual core but on LOW i get around 35 FPS on 64 player sharqi, near the surv. post. When i was buying my rig i was expecting a lot better frame rate then what i am getting...

If anyone knows a quick fix give me a PM or something.

Yep i'm getting it too, multiplayer and singleplayer pissing me off as i have just had my 6800 go graphic's card replaced and no matter which drivers i use i still have the same problem.I'm running everything on low apart from texture on medium and still getting about 5fps maybe even 10 when no-one is about.
