Was with bulldog on 1mb package and had a ping of about 33/40 which was not bad

Sky broadband then gave me 3mb, at a cheaper price but my ping ROSE to 88/95 and the difference is notable.

Niavely sky have just told me that yes, their download speeds are good but upload is bad - only at 417kb for the mid pakcage and a max of 715kb on the unlimited!

What a waste of time for gaming - apparantly sky is only good for downloading, damn and blast and lots of other swear words!

Anyway whine over, off to get some cheese to go with it

Its because Murdock's sky broadband is scanning your computer for information to send back to HQ using up your upload bandwidth. This information on peoples 'habits' is then used in some kind of sinister way to take over the world. /Conspiracy theory

Glad i didn't go with sky then.  When NTL completely fucked us around we signed up for sky tv and internet.

SKY said it would be a little while before we could get the decent 8 meg package but in the meantime they would give us the crappy basic package.  6 weeks later and still no word on an installation data for the basic package, i couldn't take it any more. Was using a god-damn dial modem that blue screened my computer 8 dial up attempts out of 10.  went with a different ISP and had 8 meg by the end of the week.  Yes it's dearer but the amount i was spending on dial up covered the entire years of saving i would have made with sky

Be vary careful if you do switch to sky.  They had an enourmous waiting list when i tried last november but the problem was they had absolutely no idea when they would be able to install it.

your problem has nothing to do with how much you can upload.

it prob more to do with skys contention ratio
my isp uses 20-1 not sure what sky uses but i bet its 50-1

prob right but either way - i got a year of teh shit to put up with before I can swap!
However ping is constant at 88/90 and never varies regardless of day of time!
Tossers!
On a brighter note, its only £5 a mont, got the modem in 3 days and connected same day as letter stated about 6 days after applying, so that side of things was OK

Come on, people. We all know Telewest/ntl:Telewest/VirginMedia(?!?) are the best for customer service, reliability, speed and, to be honest, everything. They are simply the best supplier and, hey, you'll pay a bit more for it but I have no grievances with them.
And they have to be the way to go, if they can ship out their promised 50Mb by the end of the year! That'll be top range (currently 10Mb), followed by (I think) 20/25Mb and then 10Mb. Good times, very good times!

In two words...OH BOLLOCKS!

Mine is going to be 16meg though, so hopefully I wont have problems.

Im still busy waiting for it to be connected.  They fucked up with the SKY TV package, and we had to wait an extra week before they could get it fixed.  Now I am still waiting on my modem and router etc to be delivered and its been three weeks since we ordered the package.

They have totally fucked everything up since we rang them three weeks ago, and I am pretty pissed off about it.  Why are these companies so incompetent?

I'm with virgin, but don't particularly recommend it.  I never download faster that 200kbps and everything goes slower when the population comes in from work.

Maybe someone could put together a poll to get some market research.  Be a lot of karma in it for you!

Whatever you do dont go with Pipex they are just awful, tried for nearlly 3 months to get my MAC code to change provider from them, they kept messing me around giving out the wrong code, needing more time which meant the MAC code run out.
Reason I changed from pipex was they said it was unlimited Broadband but they only let you have a 1gig download between 6pm and 11pm 7 days a week before they cut your bandwidth, just rubbish.

Now with BT costs a bit more but so far no problems what so ever, seems faster too.

The law has changed with regard to MAC codes, from yesterday I believe.  Ofcom published new rules for ISPs in December and they came into force on 14th February.  Now they have to give them within about 5 days, so it should enable you to switch more easily.

I was with NTL for the whole package - phone, tv and internet, until their customer service problems pissed me off so much that I switched.  Then I was with Demon Internet and, this is where I come back to topic, all was well until I was "upgraded" from the 2mb managed service to the 8mb ADSLmax service that seems to be the norm these days.  This is what Sky are providing.

The ADSLmax service, as I understand it, depends far more on your distance from the telephone exchange than previous ADSL services.  If, like me, you're upwards of 2 miles from the exchange, your connection speeds and ping times are going to be very poor compared to someone who lives nearer.  Also, with any new provider, especially those whose service is cheap, you're going to have teething problems as they will have far more customers than they had anticipated or can deal with.  Your contention ratio is likely to be pushed as high as possible and the download speeds you get are not going to be favourable.

That's why I changed back to NTL a couple of months ago.  Their new service is expensive (for the highest speed) but reliable and not dependent on telephone lines.  I'm now getting close to 10mb for downloads from Europe and it's wonderful.

Ignore upload speeds.  Unless you're running a server or uploading on P2P, just ignore it.

Oh and have a gander at http://www.thinkbroadband.com/  - it's an independent site that provides information on dozens (I lost count) of ISPs, news affecting broadband and, most importantly, forums where regular people talk (moan) about the issues affecting them and their ISP.
