Post anything that fascinates you about nature in here.  I know it's a stretch to think that any of us that belong to this stellar group of gamers would go outside however, maybe you rediscovered something on tv, like I just did.

As a kid I was intrigued by Peregrine Falcons, so when I was flipping channels a National Geographic special about Peregrine Falcons caught my attention.   Peregrines hunt from above and, after sighting their prey, drop into a steep dive that can top 200 miles an hour.  They pull over 25gs when they pull out of the dive and they have a transparent eyelid to protect their eyes from impact while they're diving.  Imagine driving 200mph in a race car without a helmet . . . and having a bug hit your eye.  That's why the Peregrine needs to protect its eyes.  I haven't figured out how to post pics on here, so here's a link.

I have always thought falcons and hawks were interesting. There was or is a Peregrine Falcon living in one of the skyscrapers in downtown Indianapolis, Indiana.  The Indianapolis Star used to have a couple of Falcon cams on the nest.  I don't know if they took them out for the winter or what, but I couldn't find the actual link for the cams.  Found the link to the Falcon Cams here.

To post pics on here you need to upload them to a site like Image Shack, Photobucket, or another File hosting site.  Then copy and paste the Image tags provided with the pics here in the forums.

Here is a pic of my dog I took the other day with my new digital cam. Hosted by Photobucket.

This is what I copied and pasted from Photobucket to get this pic here. Hope that helps.

I was on this route between 6-14-06 through 6-19-06.
As the days dragged on things because to become sharp and defined, my senses aware.
I could see into the stone, and the tiny orange mites that became smeared all over my hands as I climbed played their little society out before my eyes while I waited my turn.

The rock was cut and shaped as if man was meant to climb it.
I can still see individual holds when I close my eyes.

I was like a moth to a butterfly; never to be the same having tread where eagles nest.

More wonders of nature right from Yosemite.

My second big wall in Yosemite, the Washington Column.
I learned on the first climb to always offer to lead the over hanging rock as its much harder to go second.

What do you mean what makes it so hard!!!  Rock climbing is a very physically demanding sport. I know i couldn't do that.

Yeah, you have to have a lot of upper-body strength and strong hands.

Thats actually an excellent question.
https://i10.tinypic.com/34gn7o1.jpg
Because as you jumar up the rope you have to follow that plumb line and remove the gear., which is hard to reach. To remove a piece of protection, you have to get to it, remove one ascender from the rope and place it above the piece, and it that few seconds, you may be on one piece of gear. It means rapeling away from the wall to make that straight line so you can ascend the rope.
Generally, when dangling in space away from the wall the terror factor goes way up.

fixed.

ah, i see. yeah, i doubt you'll ever see me do any of that.

but just real quickly: if theres say three of you, it would mean going third was the worst, correct?

and what does jumar mean? is it a Typo?

i WOULD SAY GOING MIDDLE BLOWS THE HARDEST. fREE JUMARS= SCARY.
Jumar means ascender. Actually a brand name, but in the climbers lexicon means any ascender ( a mechanical device that slides up the rope, but not down.)

On a three man team; one man leads ( go first placing protection and stopping at higher station. When he gets to a ( belay ) station he " fixes ": the rope, and then fixes the " haul line ". The second guy will lower out from the wall on the haul line and climb the free rope with his jumars. The third ascends up the first guys rope, cleaning the protective gear out as he goes. The first two guys are already climbing at that point.
Three men is a fast method if you got a good system.

do you rappel down the front of it when you hit the top, or do you go down what appears to be a slant at the back?

It's a fairly technical descent involving several miles of tortuous hiking and down climbing along the top ( going right looking at the pix ) and then you get to a crumbly edge and start rappelling.

Yeah, whoever said sex is right!

Storms fascinate me though. Hurricanes, Tornadoes especially, typhoons, even just extremely heavy weather.
