  • What's the big difference between the 8800 GTS and GTX?

Okay so, in order to save 200 bucks on my new machine I'm getting the GTS. But I wanted to know: is there really any big differences in the two? Any info would be great.

one is memory.  GTX 768  GTS 640.  Another is power requirements.  GTX needs 30A on a 700w psu.  Or is it 750?   I have a gtx and it's sweet..

Caution
#1  Make sure you have the power

#2 These cards run hot.  Mine idled at 75C.  Now I am water cooling it.  never runs above 36C now.

Check this out..  There three diff brands but all brands are mostly the same.  I see that they even make a 320 GTS.

Sorry, power requirements are 450w with 30A on the 12v for the GTX.  But I would get a SLI certified psu.

I'll probably go with the GTS 640. It's much cheaper for not much of a decrease in visuals, so I can see. I'm getting a 680W PSU or 750W PSU so it can definately handle it. Thanks.

I checked this out when I bought my new PC as well. The only difference in frames with every thing maxed in all games is about 10 frames per second. Get the GTS and save $200 for an awesome soundcard, you have the exact same system as me too so expect some rad fucking shit with it

This might explain, a THG look at the three 8800 series cards currently on the market.

Lies.

You can run an 8800GTX SLI system on that much power. People keep claiming the 8800GTX uses way more power than it does. A 500W PSU is sufficient for an 8800GTX.

The most important difference between the 2 cards is not memory or power requirements, it is the number of stream processors the GPUs have. The GTX has 128 (@1.35GHz) the GTS has 96. It is these stream processors (which combine pixel and vertex pipes) which are the most important new feature of the G80 series cards.

I did correct myself in my second post.  Read before you post.

1270 on a GTS times 42, PSE has 86 slots for GPU PSU 912V wattage pipelines 4x

1.21 Jiggawatts!

Hope that makes sense

So you did. Might have made much more sense to correct the original post, especially since you've editted it anyway. It also would've been a good idea to actually point out the real major difference, which is the number of stream processors. The clockspeed is also a factor, probably a bigger one than the amount of memory.

I also posted a link with the differences between the three, IE the stream processors.
Damb, must I type everything!
I was just trying to help the guy.  You guys are just too picky.

It's a good link too. I never knew the 320MB version had higher clock and memory speeds (*edit*D'oh, didn't notice first time round they were all from different manufacturers so that really says nothing much, other than the fact XFX clock their cards higher - good for me with my XFX 8800GTS 640). It doesn't explain anything about the stream processors or even hint at their importance though, which is what I was trying to pick up on since no one had.
