well, this should be in tech, but...

any preferences: amd or intel? nvidia or ati? is dx10 important to you?

most high end graphics cards support dual monitors, so you don't need to worry about that.

And if it can play games, it can do school work.

as much as I don't like to admit it, you're best bet is going with an intel C2D right now.
~$300

I prefer nvidia, so I'd recommend the 8000 gtx, on the premise that everything stays in your budget.
~$650

That leaves you with about $1300 for everything else. unfortunately, I don't have time to go through each component right now.

wait till the middle of march, new line of cards will be out from nvidia, the new evga boards are really nice, also i would look at getting at least one raptor to put the os on and a couple of 500gb seagates for everything else. creative has the best sound cards, and at least a 700 watt power supply. pc power and cooling, ocz, hyper, enermax, in other words companies who are known for making quality psu. also ram is kinda of a toss up, atleast 2gb of what ever brand you choose.

brief synopsis of what you should look at.
