I (well rather, my dad) is looking for a nice home audio system. It's gonna be used for the TV and PS3 he has. Here are some things we're searching for:

-5.1 surround sound
-Good quality
-Able to get the best out of HD audio (For instance, the BHD BluRay disc says it has uncompressed PCM audio. Do I need something special to take advantage of this?)
-Decent price

Also, what about connectors? Are optical connections the best for this stuff? All that has to be hooked up to this stuff is a PS3 and a cable box. Both the PS3 and cable box have SPDIF outputs.

I would look for solutions myself, but I have no idea what sites have reliable reviews for these things.

Thanks!

edit: Buying seperate parts is not out of the question. As long as they're compatible. My dad and I are total noobs to home audio.. If it helps, here's a crude painting of the room layout *THE RED LINES=FREE SPACE*:

it all depends on how much money you guys are willing to spend on the system
my dad's really into audio system in my home and he's been working(buying new stuff) for years.
2 weeks ago we spent 10k on new tv and few things hehe

anyway, one of the best speaker-maker out there is B&W, of course you are expected to pay 10k+++ on a speaker alone.. (our front speakers are B&W 802D and it's fucking awesome)

things you need are:
receiver (that can handle 1080p since you have ps3)
speaker(2 front, 2 rear, center)
subwoofer
surge controller(forgot the actual name for this but this controls the current which could result in noise in your sound)

hope your tv can support 1080p..
just go to your nearest dedicated home audio system place..
they will be able to hook you up very nicely

Agreed, its all to do with price, however there are some all in one systems (as in DVD with homecinema receiver and speakers) that actually are pretty good.  Obviously not as good as spending a fortune on a homecinema but for all intents and purposes it will be great, denon make a great all in one receiver and its like $700 if I remember.  600W RMS, and a fantastic DVD player, best bang for buck imho.

If you are buying seperate I suggest for receivers you look at Denon or Yamaha (yamahas are about the best btw).  For speakers I'm saying bose or jamo, I wouldnt buy a sony for the best audio as its not what they are renound for, its there visuals that they do well in.

I dunno much about ps3, does it have coaxil?  (better signal than optical)

Whats the budget mate?  You can spend a fortune on this stuff really.
